The Marshals & The Lawkeepers Organization in Tales of Cevantia | World Anvil

The Marshals & The Lawkeepers

The guild is made up of two branches or forces forming a Guild dedicated to both deities, Otthios and Artamesia

The Lawkeepers

The Lawkeepers are a distinguished order of soldiers and scribes devoted to the twin tenets of eradicating monstrosities and upholding justice. Committed to the principles of Otthios, the God of Law and Order, they serve as both the sword and the scales in their relentless quest to combat evil and deliver equitable justice. This formidable order is divided into two core branches: the Paladin Knights and the Scribe Adjudicators, each responsible for different aspects of their mission.

The Paladin Knights

The Paladin Knights of the Lawkeepers are the embodiment of valor and unwavering commitment to righteousness. Devoted to Otthios, the God of Law and Order, they serve as the frontline soldiers in the battle against monstrosities and forces of darkness. Clad in shining armor and wielding weapons blessed by their faith, they venture into the darkest corners of the world to protect the innocent and purge evil. These noble warriors act not only as defenders of the realms but also as executors of justice, ensuring that malevolent entities are held accountable for their actions.   The charismatic and renowned Knight-Paladin Sir Laurence Redfyn leads this branch of the Lawkeepers. He presides over the most significant trials in the world, guiding the pursuit of justice and representing the unwavering resolve of the Lawkeepers. The Paladin Knights can be found in every significant settlement throughout Cevantia, ready to respond to threats and deliver retribution when necessary.

The Scribe Adjudicators

The Scribe Adjudicators form the scholarly and diplomatic arm of the Lawkeepers. As ardent followers of Otthios, they uphold justice by serving as impartial adjudicators and independent advisors. Their duties encompass overseeing legal disputes, negotiating trade deals, and determining guilt in complex cases. With their extensive knowledge of laws, customs, and jurisprudence, the Scribe Adjudicators ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.   Supported by many of the kingdoms in Cevantia, the Scribe Adjudicators have the authority to move freely between countries. Their wisdom and impartiality are highly respected and sought after, making them essential figures in legal matters and international relations. They act as a vital bridge between nations, fostering cooperation and ensuring equitable solutions to disputes.

Relationship with Efan Nalore

While the Lawkeepers have garnered support and recognition from many kingdoms, their influence is notably limited among the isolationist Efan Naloreelves. The elves' deep-seated distrust of outsiders, including the Lawkeepers, has resulted in a lack of sway within their territory. Despite this, the Lawkeepers continue their mission, undeterred by the challenges posed by the enigmatic Efan Nalore.

The Marshals

The Marshals stand as the unwavering protectors of the realm's rural heartlands. These well-trained rangers, devoted to the worship of Artamesia, are the vanguards of peace and security in the countryside. They patrol the roads and lands between villages, ensuring the safety of travelers, keeping hordes of goblins and orcs at bay, marking and maintaining hunting trails, apprehending bandits, and so much more. While their numbers are limited, their skills are unparalleled, and their presence is vital to the harmony and safety of the realm.   The Marshals are organized into a network of regional divisions, with each division responsible for a specific area of the countryside. At the helm of each division stands a Lead Marshal, the highest-ranking and most experienced member who oversees the region. Under their guidance, a team of skilled Marshals, typically working in pairs, ensures the safety and order of their designated zone. These pairs are commonly composed of a Lead Marshal and a Vice Marshal, who is often a trainee learning the ropes of the trade. However, the most skilled Marshals are known to operate their lands solo, showcasing their mastery of their craft. The Marshals' numbers are deliberately kept limited to ensure that only the best and most talented are entrusted with these vital duties. While they typically work in pairs, they may group up for major assignments or when emergencies strike. In times of peace, they function as the watchful protectors of the countryside, keeping order, assisting peasants, and preventing threats from reaching the heartlands of Cevantia.

Worship of Artamesia

The Marshals' devotion to Artamesia, the goddess of nature and protection, is a central aspect of their identity. They see their role as a sacred duty, acting as the guardians of the land and its inhabitants. Their faith strengthens their resolve and is believed to enhance their natural abilities, further empowering them in their role as protectors of Cevantia's heartlands.   In summary, the Marshals of Cevantia are a select and highly skilled group of rangers who, through their devotion to Artamesia, dedicate themselves to preserving the safety and tranquility of the realm's rural territories. With their vigilance, knowledge, and unwavering commitment, they play a pivotal role in ensuring that the heartlands of Cevantia remain peaceful and secure for all its inhabitants.
