The Grave Order Organization in Tales of Cevantia | World Anvil

The Grave Order

Tales of their adventures have been told for centuries. Their skills are said to be unmatched when it comes to fighting the monsters that hunt men. They are the ones you send when no one else wants to do the dirty work. The ones who do not fear what lurks in the dark. They say they are just doing it for the good of all, but, why are they being paid for it instead of doing it for free?- A scholar being questioned about what the Grave Order is.

Public Agenda

The Creed of The Grave Order asks its followers to commit their lives to the hunt of entities and creatures that threaten the sanctity of life and joy. While the sacrifice is great, the reward is the continued existence of purity and good in the world. The Order strives to protect those who cannot protect themselves from the shadows, taking no credit for their deeds or reward for their services, beyond the means to live and travel. Some have strayed, focusing on building a fortune for themselves, but should word of such intent make it back to the heads of the Order, and their actions begin to threaten the innocents they’ve sworn to protect, they may find themselves the hunted.

History

Dark Beginnings

Hundreds of years ago, an evil power exerted its dark will over the desert landscape of Anamat, corrupting its outlying townships and spreading chaos among its people. Undeath washed over grave sites like a plague, shadowed beasts stalked the midnight dunes, and the influence of fiends befouled even Anamat's purest souls. In the eleventh hour, a priest of Malmorus named Filip Hunn prayed for a way to protect his people. Malmorus's inspiration came in the form of long-hidden knowledge: the secrets to blood magic. Taking his newfound gifts, Filip trained his most trusted warriors in these techniques, giving a portion of their humanity in exchange for the power to defend their people. This marked the origin of The Grave Order, and the first Blood Clerics and Blood Hunters. The Grave Order work in relative secrecy, as the nature of their abilities are largely misunderstood and often lead to persecution. Their numbers are small, as the price is great and the Order only accept those strong of heart with little to lose.
Eagerly taking in those who volunteer, the Grave Order puts new potential Hunters through intense mental and relentless physical and magical training to make them dangerous and highly versatile against their vast array of opponents, many of which possess superhuman speed, strength and/or other deadly powers. These procedures ultimately mean that each fully-trained Hunter is built specifically to hunt and kill inhuman prey. However, not much is known about the nature of the blood magic that accompanies them and the cost of gaining these impressive abilities. Small sects of the Order have ventured East to wander the lands of Talaman and the islands of Clesoryn in recent years, keeping out of the public eye and remaining vigilant to the signs of familiar darkness undermining the region.

RELATIONSHIPS

They have no alliance or allegiance to any standing government or group. Solitary in action and discrete in display, they’ve not yet drawn the attention of many factions in Talaman. However, it is only a matter of time before more curious eyes begin to seek answers to questions about these dark guardians and their true nature, with the Grave Order acutually having bloody encounters with members of the Marshals and the Black Talon already. Back in Anamat however, the kingdom of Val Liongris despises them and their methods.
