Structure

Hierarchy is important for wizards’ guilds to function. At the top of the chain stands the Headmaster, an Archmage, a powerful individual, both in arcane prowess and in social standing. They usually inspire respect from others, boast a rich history in adventuring and in the politics of Mageocracy, and have a number of legendary achievements to their name. This is of course needed, as they hold the reigns of a worldwide organization. Operating directly, the Assembly is a group of mages, each accomplished in their own right, who collectively make decisions in regards to organizational matters, everyday occurrences and topics of utmost importance for the future of the Arcanum. They are tasked with making sure the Archmage doesn’t fail the academy or become corrupt. Other than that, there are many other positions that ensure the smooth operation of a magical school like the Academy, mostly related to the specific duties of each School of Magic and its tower. All students are split into 5 “Circles” based on their ability to cast spells of each level, as spells are traditionally categorized. These Circles are essentially a Ranking System in the Arcanum.

The culture of the Magic School of Castburg is a rich tapestry that intertwines centuries of magical tradition with a modern and inclusive approach to education. History

The location for the school was carefully chosen in a picturesque region of Yast, blessed with a potent magical aura. Construction began in earnest, with architects and mages collaborating to create a magnificent campus that would inspire and facilitate the pursuit of magical knowledge. Over time, the buildings grew, with each addition reflecting the architectural styles and magical traditions of different eras.   From its inception, the Magic School of Castburg aimed to be a haven of learning, open to all who displayed magical potential, regardless of social status or lineage. This departure from the traditional elitist approach to magic education garnered support from all corners of Yast, and soon the school flourished with a diverse student body, where talent and passion were the only prerequisites for admission.   Throughout the ages, Castburg became renowned for its exceptional faculty. Mages and scholars of great renown were attracted to the school's pursuit of magical enlightenment, and they joined the ranks of instructors, imparting their wisdom and expertise to generations of aspiring mages. From renowned elementalists to powerful diviners and alchemists, the faculty at Castburg ensured that students received a comprehensive education that embraced all aspects of magic.   The Magic School of Castburg played an instrumental role in the evolution of magical practices and the development of Yast as a mageocracy. Graduates of the school went on to become influential figures in Yast's governance, advising rulers and shaping policies that balanced the needs of society with the responsible use of magic. Their expertise and ethical compass helped foster a stable and prosperous mageocracy, where the powers of magic were wielded for the greater good.   Over the years, the school witnessed periods of growth and transformation. Expansion projects were undertaken to accommodate the increasing number of students and to incorporate emerging magical disciplines. From the study of ancient tomes to the integration of experimental magical technologies, Castburg evolved to embrace new frontiers of magical knowledge, adapting to the changing needs of its students and the world around it.

Laws

The school functions with a very broad and detailed set of laws. These were written by the second Archmage, Headmaster Azarius, and even though the core set has remained unchanged in time, they are a set of everchanging rules and conditions that are added or removed based on the arising needs. The Law is kept in the Archmage’s tower, second floor from the top, and it is written in a book that magically can erase text and create new pages when handled with the Quill and Gloves of the Lawmaker. There is no need to go into detail about the Laws of the School, but keep in mind they generally function with the best intentions and with the safety of the students and the school itself as the first priority. For those who break the rules, there are numerous punishments, such as forced labor, reimbursement, mandatory missions, or for the worst violations, expulsion or even imprisonment. In the rare scenario of an immense violation of conduct, even execution is permitted, but this hasn’t occurred in over a century.

Education

Entrance and Ranks

Every exam in the Academy takes place in the Exam Building, which is situated directly next to the Archmage’s Tower. “The room where fate has no power” it is called, especially until a few hundred years ago, since the Masters had the power to decide the future of each student so absolutely that even fate was left out. This has changed in the last few centuries, along with the abolishment of other archaic traditions and practices, and the examination procedure is much more fair and less traumatizing. As things stand now, the admissions candidate or examinee wizard enters the room to find only a semicircle table with ten Masters seated and looking at them. These are the Archmage, the eight Masters, and the Exam Master.    On the last day of every year, the admission exams are held in the Exam Building, next to the tower of the Archmage’s. For a month, admission recommendations have been gathered, and entrees have been selected from a rich pool that usually consists of talented people from poor villages, children from rich families, and wizard candidates that were scouted by members of the Arcanum. The exams begin on sunrise and end at sunset, and that night, the Academy celebrates the acceptance of the new blood as well as the change of the year. The results are announced to each participant on the spot, as the test is performed in the presence of the Council and the Archmage, as well as the Exam Master, and it produces results instantly.

After Acceptance

The duration of a student's education at the Magic School of Castburg before they can graduate varies depending on their chosen magical discipline and the level of mastery they wish to achieve. The standard curriculum at Castburg typically spans six years, but some students may choose to extend their studies for additional years to delve deeper into specialized areas of magic or pursue advanced degrees.   During the initial years of enrollment, students focus on foundational magical principles, theory, and practical application. They learn the basics of spellcasting, potion brewing, and the manipulation of elemental forces. As they progress through the curriculum, they have the opportunity to specialize in specific magical disciplines such as evocation, abjuration, enchantment, divination, transmutation, illusion, or healing, among others.   In the later years of their education, students undertake advanced coursework and engage in practical projects that test their knowledge and skills. They may participate in real-world magical endeavors, internships with accomplished mages, or contribute to research projects under the guidance of experienced faculty members. These experiences help students apply their knowledge in practical situations and develop a deeper understanding of the responsibilities that come with wielding magic.

The Circle Exam

This is the most prestigious exam in the school of magic, as it certifies wizards in the art of the arcane. The exam is organized based on ability to access spells of each of the nine spell levels and is considered a success when a wizard proves that they are able to consistently cast spells of each level, especially in situations of crisis or stress. The wizard is then certified as belonging to each of the nine Circles, based on the highest level spell they can cast. As such, a wizard that can cast 5th-level spells and below naturally, but has cast a 6th-level once but cannot replicate it again, would qualify for the Exam for the 5th Circle, and is on their way to claim the 6th Circle soon. It should be noted here that the exams are the same for every student, regardless of the school of magic they specialize in.  Following the successful participation in a Circle Exam, the wizard is awarded a golden pin that depicts a number of homocentric circles filled with runes, equal to their rank. The runes inside each circle magically rotate with alternating speed and rotations.    Entering a circle grants you a series of advantages. The students of a specific circle may enroll in its classes and practice their newly learned spells. Additionally, they gain access to higher level scrolls and rarer books in the library, as well as access to laboratories and research floors. The exam mostly consists of the student casting a spell or two of the corresponding level. In the upper tiers of the circles, specific hazards or impediments might be added to place the caster in a difficult spot and discern whether they are capable of producing results under pressure. This might be achieved either with magical means like auras that impede casting, or by pitting the caster against a foe in controlled combat.

Special Rankings

After the 5th Circle, students can officially pursue an expertise in a field, such as Lore, Medicine, Combat Wizardry, Forging, Exploration, Diplomacy and others. These aren’t directly related to magic. Instead, they are study plans that help the practitioners become experts and then learn spells that are relevant to the field of choice. For example, a Combat Wizard might wield an arsenal of evocation and abjuration spells, while a wizard in Diplomacy might favor enchantment and divination spells. These things are not set it stone and can vary in application. A student may pursue any field from the start, but official ranks in these can only be given to 5th Circles and above.

Experienced Casters

Entering the curriculum as an experienced caster is a bit different. You have to both undertake the Entrance Exam and also prove your ability to cast higher level spells the same way students do. Even if you pass, you get a bronze badge instead of a gold one, which is exactly the same by law but is discriminated against by some wizards. Alistair and a few others of the Council Members, as well as the majority of the students, are against this and wish to change it, but they encounter resistance from the members that solemnly believe in more archaic ways.   It is important to note that while the standard duration of education at Castburg is around six years, individual circumstances, aptitude, and the pursuit of advanced degrees can extend a student's time at the school. The Magic School of Castburg values the unique paths and ambitions of its students, ensuring that each one receives the necessary education and support to reach their full magical potential.
