Tears of the Beholder Species in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Tears of the Beholder

A magical species of flower has been found recently in the depths of the Amazon rain forest. Researchers discovered the bloom at the roots of of the trees up in the mountains in the West. These flowers appear near areas where caves are prevalent and could be fertilized and spread by the bats living in the caves. Since their location is so remote there is a great deal of speculation on the source of these flowers.    This species was discovered by a group of researchers who were looking for new medicines. They brought back dried samples and attempted to bring back a living sample but it did not survive the trip back to the University. Upon studying the flowers, roots, stems and leaves, it was determined that the flowers had the power to slow down a living beings metabolism, almost like what happens to those who fall into an icy river and are rescued. The potential in medicine is tremendous. If added to an emergency IV it could give a patient more time to survive until they arrived at a hospital. If given in a small dose it could serve as a rescue tool for those with extreme allergies. Once these medicinal properties were discovered the demand for these flowers went through the roof.    Missions are now underway to bring back living specimens for cultivation and harvest.    We must mention that the original researches who discovered this plant named the flower Tears of the Beholder. They explained that they named it that as fans of Dungeons and Dragons, the roll playing game. The rumor, however, says that the flowers are the literal tears of beholders living in the cave systems of these mountains. While no confirmed sightings of Beholders have been reported, we certainly wish the mission personnel luck in their quest.

This has a fun meta feel to the article as it refers to D&D while describing the plant.
