Dragons
Dragons started coming back into the world with the rise of Atlantis. At first it was the smaller, weaker dragons. It wasn't by 'breed' of dragon as much as it was the magical force the dragon had collected. By the time these stories are being told, the older, more powerful dragons are starting to awaken [at least that's how they see it].
Dragons come in all shapes and sizes. Some are as small as lizards, others are as large as mountains. Not all have the ability to magically shift shapes. Some use illusion to adopt new forms. Some, like crows are attracted to pretty baubles and have limited intelligence, others are intellectual and highly intelligent. Some dragons are magical adepts, others have innate magical abilities, yet others are magic but only manifest it by their own existence. Dragons are a varied as humans. Don't let the physical form fool you as it does many. A tiny dragon can be a master magic user, while a large dragon can be dumb as a stump. Color also doesn't give anything away, nor do wings or the lack thereof. Your best bet is to be respectful until you get to know the individual dragon.
Protection of all kinds is part of dragon nature. The myths had it all wrong. Dragons wouldn't have eaten any virgin maidens unless those virgin maidens were violating whatever they had sworn to protect. For some dragons that might be plants, for others a specific mountain range. Some protect their hoards, while others protect a certain type of fish, or stream. Generally the ability of the dragon leads to the size of the item/group the dragon decides to protect. A level 1 dragon might defend a specific tree where a level 10 might opt for a content. Dragons have very definite ideas of right and wrong and the more powerful they are, the more definitive those ideas.
