The Rise of Midnight

Before the first dawn, there was nothing. Then the Morning Lord created the sun and the day, and the people saw the world’s bounty and gave praise. From the Morning Lord was born twin daughters. To the Pale Maiden, his favored daughter, he gifted the moon along with power near his own for she was tasked with protecting the mortals while he slept. To his other daughter, the Mistress of Midnight, he gave nothing and she resented them both. But the Mistress was not lacking for long. She found power in the mortals’ jealousy and greed, for her father had not treated them all equally. She learned to use their envy to corrupt them. When the gods began gifting mortals with magic, the Mistress of Midnight initially had no gifts to give, but she delighted in corrupting others’ gifts to her will.   Eventually, mockery proved insufficient to satisfy her resentment and the Mistress began corrupting magic itself, creating a well of anti-magic only she and her followers could tap. Allying with gods of the underworld such as the Weaver of Souls, her corruption spread unchecked in a time when mortals threatened to unseat the gods themselves. Had it not been for the sacrifice of the Lady of Mysteries and the Collapse that resulted, it is entirely possible the Mistress and her cult would currently rule the world; a world of eternal midnight.     -Translated passage from an ancient Morning Lord religious tome
