The Garden

Ask ten citizens of Brittian why the Garden, the great nature preserve on the western shore, was originally established and you will receive ten different answers, ranging from a desire to protect rare wildlife, to buffering against unchecked industrialization, to political corruption. Ask ten score and you might just hear a far different tale; a fairy tale of actual fairies, woodland elves, tree folk, and ancient fey. As the story goes, rivers of magic once flowed throughout Europe, pooling in the Garden and maintaining a bridge to the great wild on the other side. The creatures of the Garden protected their island, first with wards, and then with beguiling magic, tricking their neighbors to offer protection. But over time, the rivers dried up and the bridge closed.   While most outside the Garden scoff at such a fairy tale, denizens of this emerald countryside know all too well how close to the truth it rings. After the Event, magic didn't return to Europe in a flood; however trickles did flow down the unseen riverbeds, meandering, branching, and eventually streaming into the Garden. Within a few years the Veil, bridge to the great wild, opened once again, if just a little. Today there is free movement between the Garden and the other side... but the great return is in jeopardy.   With the fall of Brittian's parliament, the Garden's protected status is no longer secure. Many of its denizens suspect the French and House Reyven are coming for the Garden's magic, which would force them back into exile, if not to their death. All spare magic is being used to maintain the wards. Meanwhile, some of the bravest of the Garden's denizens are leaving their haven to find help; for the Dreamer has spoken.
