Short Public Excerpt/Summary

Before Lee's funeral, Velayna gives Sabbath some much-needed advice.

Sabbath looked at himself in the mirror, his gaze intent on his own eyes. He was looking, though, for something that was not... him. He was told that he would not be able to perceive in any real way the entity that had tethered itself, or rather HERself, to him after his latest extraction from the Force's version of the Afterlife, but he still tried. It was, as yet, a futile effort.   He was shirtless and he scanned the rest of what he could see. The scarring wounds that he had received since his last extraction were gone. Again. His skin was as flawless as that of a newborn. Again. He then....   "Falling in love with yourself?," Velayna asked from the doorway. Sabbath turned a smirk in her direction, a retort on his lips, but his eyes widened and he started.   "What are you wearing?!," he looked for something to... he grabbed a towel and tossed it at her. It hit her and she let it fall. She looked down at what she was wearing and shrugged.   "What? It's cute," she defended her choice, smiling at the skin tight low cut dress.   "I can see your... cleavage," Sabbath picked up the towel and covered her hastily. "I didn't even know you HAD cleavage.   "... and I gotta stop saying 'cleavage'...," he whispered to himself as he squeezed past her to exit the vanity closet.   "You're not even wearing a shirt " she argued.   Sabbath stretched out a hand and his shirt flew from where it hung on the door into his hand. He struggled into it.   "That's different, " he replied weakly, growling when his head failed to fit into his sleeve. "Go put on something more... more... just MORE, please."   "Elora says that a woman's body is just another weapon in her arsenal," Velayna said as she admired herself in the mirror, smiling.   "Well, go cover your arsenal," Sabbath finally managed to get his shirt on. "Or I'll make you put those robes back on."   "I saw what Tia wore to that party on the Holo," the girl kept fighting. "Did you give her a hard time?   "Of course not," she answered her own rhetorical question. "You were probably drooli... "   She saw the downcast set of his eyes and she stopped.   "I'm sorry," she winced and whispered. She knew Tia almost died that night.   "Just get dressed," Sabbath said as he turned away, looking up at the ceiling, his shoulders hung in defeat. "You can't wear that to Lee's memorial service."   "Sabbath, go talk to her," Velayna's voice was soft and calm.   "She doesn't want to talk to me," he looked at the floor. "She doesn't want... me"   "Well, you didn't see her on the ship after you...," Velayna bit her lip but decided to go on. "She was scared. It's hard to tell sometimes because, if she knows somebody's watching, she gets... she hides herself. But, when she thinks she's alone...   "Sabbath, she cares about you," the girl sighed.   "I didn't say she didn't care," he whispered. "I said she didn't..." He did not finish.   "You don't know that," the girl argued. "Just talk to her."   "I did," Sabbath shook his head. "And that's what she said."   "She said that?" Velayna looked at her feet and sagged. "I can't believe that. You should have seen her when..."   "Well," Sabbath's voice became different. "What she said was, she didn't want to need anyone."   "Well that's not even close to the same thing, you idiot," she moved over to him and spun him to face her. "All men are so dense. You hear but you don't listen. Why don't you stop being so needy for a second and put yourself in her shoes."   Velayna advanced on him and he retreated, his expression alarmed.   "Her best friend just died. Her man did, too, but that's okay, because... oh, yeah... he comes back from the dead because he's an agent of a galactic Force conspiracy that has found the secret to immortality and are at war with an invasive species from beyond the third dimension!," Velayna's voice was high and furious. "And you're all mopey because you didn't get a hug!?   "Maybe YOU...," she poked his chest with a finger. His back was to the wall. There was nowhere to run. "... should put on those robes and call ME Mistress, because it looks like I'm going to need to teach YOU everything. "   She kept poking him.   "Now, here is what you're going to do, " her livid sneer only rose to his chin, but he looked terrified. "You're going to get dressed. You're going to go to the service, you're going to stand by her side, you're going to say NOTHING, and just... be there. Not a word, Sabbath. I swear, not a peep.   "If she wants to talk to you, she'll talk to you. Otherwise, zip it!" she was cooling down. "She needs a man, not a puppy hounding her for affection.   "Do you understand me,?"   Sabbath's mouth moved, but nothing came out. He nodded.   "Good," she turned away and went back to the mirror. "Now, get dressed."   "Maybe you should also...," he tried.   "I'll wear whatever I want!" she yelled and Sabbath quick stepped to his room.   "I think Tia will like this dress," she said to herself after she heard his door close.
