Autarch Republic
The Autarch Republic is a large democratic nation located on Taldaris's eastern continent. Although they are a unified nation, each city has a high level of autonomy.
Structure
The Autarch Republic is led by the Autarch, who is elected from the current body of Senators. The Autarch holds absolute power over the entire Republic. Each Senator has full authority to run their district (typically consisting of a major city as their seat of power along with the surrounding lands and towns) which is superseded only by the Autarch. All free men within the Republic have the right to vote for their Senator amongst whichever candidates declare their campaigns.
History
The area that is now the Autarch Republic was once dotted with many independent city states who constantly alternated between conflict and cooperation. In 1123, several of the independent city states formed the Autarch Republic. Over the following years, the other city states in the area joined the Republic. In an effort to keep their autonomy, the Senatorial system was created to allow each area to govern themselves.
Military
There is a small standing army that serves the Autarch personally with troops drawn from every district. In times of war, the Autarch levies troops similar to a traditional feudal system. During peace, the Senators are free to use their own military force at will with the one exception of engaging in warfare with other Republic districts, which is to be met with maximum force from the rest of the Republic.
