Mariellian
The sound of hammers on steel and hammers on wood argue back and forth across the morning still, the dawn just broken across the hills and fields. This is the day that she will wade into soon, one of those young boys running firewood back and forth for their creased and stubble-jawed mentors will someday be her groom, probably anyhow... yet the call of that open road, running out the far side of town is strong, stronger than she remembers. She holds her mother's had tighter, ready to sell their flowers at the town square. They walk together, close, as a pair of big Lycans walk past, nodding good morning, but getting no closer than the mother and daughter do. They will sell their flowers as the good people, the good people of this place that shouldn't be a place, this impossible place of peace, go about their business of keeping this place peaceful and wealthy. She will marry that boy, shoveling coals into the furnace, but maybe, just maybe she'll follow that road aways... Maybe...
Naming Traditions
Family names
Mariel is a country that was formed from the borders of Veitenland and Morogh and as a result shares the Teutono-Nordic/Anglo-Celtic naming traditions for both first and last names of their neighboring countries.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Like all of the Inner Realms Mariellians speak Common, what we would call English, but their dialect of it is most common to American English. In the north it comes with a slight Canadian or possibly Germanic tinge and in the south and east it tends to be more Anglo-Irish or American Southern.
Culture and cultural heritage
Their culture borrows heavily from both that of Veitenland and Morogh.
Shared customary codes and values
Mariellians believe firmly in the values of peace, prosperity, and humility, as well as hard-work. For them, labor is a duty, a higher calling than simply existence, leading to a cultural regard for work and humility.
Common Dress code
The folks of Mariel are not complex when it comes to dressing, men generally wear trousers and tunics and women usually wear simple dresses. As Lord Varien did not much love finery, most nobles also dress in a simple manner. It is considered polite for people of either gender to wear a head-covering when outdoors and remove it upon going inside.
Art & Architecture
Mariellian Art tends to be representational and as realistic as possible, sculpture being considered to be the highest. Architecture is primarily functional. Houses are usually made of brick and usually have two stories, but other buildings, especially larger buildings generally borrow from the architectural heritage of Veitenland or Morogh as it was they who first ruled here.
Coming of Age Rites
A child comes of age around 16, this is when they are expected to enter their designated trade or start seeking a suitable marriage partner.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Graves are very sacred to Mariellians, a tradition handed down to them by their Moro ancestors and reinforced by the Cult of Tarja. Graves and graveyards are not to be disturbed. The dead are to be honored in living and by leaving small things at their grave to honor their memory. Many pray that in the next world they will be blessed and carried over eventually to Tarja's care.
