Jahlbari

The long shadows of a pyramid cast along the back streets of a bustling city. A troop of Gnolls, broad-shouldered and grim, eyes downcast carry a litter on their backs, a Tabaxi lady reclines reading a tablet of some variety for the news of the day as she is ferried rapidly about her business by the best slaves money can buy. A tall, olive-skinned man, head shaved shiny walks alongside the litter keeping an eye on the crowd, a strange, hooked sword swinging at his side, ready for action, ready to protect his mistress.   The merchants on either side of the road seem to step back a little, their hawking becomes quieter as the lady passes and resumes to its former climax as she disappears around the columned corner. Things go on as they have since the first city was built around the string of Oases down across the great desert, under the yawning red sun.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Generally the humans of Jahlbar take their naming cues from the Tabaxi of Jahlbar, following the same naming structure, but since the humans who settled in Jahlbar, but sometimes they still carry the Greco-Roman names of their original home of Stereos.

See Tabaxi.

Shared customary codes and values

As the vast majority of humans of Jahlbar are not the originators of this culture or native to Jahlbar, they are the adopters of the culture they entered rather than changed. While they did carry down a great amount of food and art culture from Stereos, but the strength of Tabaxi society made it easy for humans to merge into society rather than create an anthropomorphic society.

Average technological level

Generally Jahlbar is significantly ahead of the other human societies in technology.

Common Etiquette rules

More about etiquette can be found in the Tabaxi section.

Common Dress code

For upper class humans, those who serve in government of have great riches tend to dress in the matter of the Tabaxi, complex and flattering, often shaving their heads for men or wearing their bangs and hair blunted for women. Working class, or middle-caste humans usually wear wool cloaks, head coverings, and sandals. It is common for humans to allow themselves more freedom of appearance, like beards and long hair. Humans in the lowest class and Gnoll slaves dress only in white with no ornamentation, human male slaves also shave their heads.

Art & Architecture

Art is interesting, in that there is something of a clash between the styles of the majority of humans coming from Stereos with its highly classical approach to art and sculpture and the general style of Ancient Egypt, this has the most overlap in the middles castes. Private homes are usually one story and relatively small, with flat rooves and a few rooms inside. Large houses often contain many pillars, columns, rooms, and generally several open areas for the desert climate. Water is a at a premium and only the rich can have private cisterns or bathing pools, the greatest of luxuries.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

See Tabaxi for many of the customs and traditions

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When a creature of any caste is born it is cleaned in a temple, a public cleansing at 6 months.

Coming of Age Rites

A creature comes of age at 16. In the upper class this means a ritual cleansing before Amman-Suul and the shaving of the head for humans or the addition of rings to the tail of a Tabaxi. In the middle class this translates into a second ritual cleansing, but no extra honors.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Creatures are embalmed and buried with their most treasured worldly possessions. For the poor this may be in a back garden, a mass grave, or by the side of the road. For the middle caste this would be in a proper cemetery or perhaps a small mausoleum. For the rich this would be in a pyramid or underground necropolis.
