The Sacred Empire of Jahlbar

The Empire, the original empire, the original superpower is back. The Pharaoh demands conquest. Her land stolen by Varien is under her command again, the dynasty will reign, Stereos, the infidels, the infidels who drove away their great prophet, their hope for salvation will be made to answer for their foolishness. The desert phoenix will rise again and world shall be at her talons.

Structure

The governmental structure of Jahlbar is unique. In the Days of the Ancient Kings, all the Oasis land and all the land along the river was filled with several small kingdoms that might encompass a city and its surrounding areas. Eventually, these were slowly conquered by the the Pharaohs of Telmarna. Gradually the dynasty of Telmarna would eventually rule all the way down the river and up to the edge of the jungle forming the Empire of Jahlbar, a collection of petty kings ruled by by a single pharaoh, the Queen of Telmarna.

Public Agenda

Jahlbar has been rather unapologetic about its goal to spread its kingdom to the ends of the Earth, though its only active war in recent years was against Stereos which now pays them tribute. Realizing that conquering the Inner Realms by Warfare is near impossible, the Pharaohs have turned their attention to economic victory through their allegiance to the Dwarves and access to the riches of the desert and jungle.

Assets

Because of their vast population, wealth, and general unity, Jahlbar has the largest standing army among the inner realms as well as a large peace force and a decently sized navy.

History

Jahlbar was originally simply a collection of trader states spread across the desert, the most powerful of which was Telmarna and its pharaoh until an influx of humans from Sterii moved down to escape the religious persecution of the Priesthood of the Holy Ideals. This led to a mass population exodus in around 500 B.V. Most of these immigrants flocked to the biggest city near the border, Telmarna, swelling its size fivefold. It quickly became the most powerful city in the region and began again its quest of conquest.   The Empire found itself for a period of 400 years a unified, vastly powerful empire, nearly unstoppable, with Stereos, Sabea, Morogh, and the Gnolls all paying tribute on a regular basis, but after Varien defeated the Empress Pharaoh in single combat the empire's fall from grace was rapid and ugly, leading to a shrunken and less powerful empire than ever. However, the lack of suitable replacement for Varien has allowed the Pharaoh again to summon her forces together and begin to build her empire again. The land of gods and sand shall again pierce the northern lands.

Demography and Population

The major population is made of humans, followed by Gnolls, and Tabaxi in that order. Despite their being a distinct ethnic minority, Tabaxi are easily the most powerful group. The majority of the population follows the rivers and canal ways of the Jahlbar which cut through the glittering desert.

Territories

The territory of Jahlbar stretches from the Sea to the south, well into the desert with no true frontier, the generally accepted frontier is at the tomb of Akaneshen. In the west their territory stretches to the southern wards of Stereos and all the way to the great jungle in the east.

Military

The military has a navy, the Royal Army, and the Myriad which can all be utilized at a moments notice from virtually anywhere in the country at any time thanks to an incredibly advanced communication system unlike any other in the world. Which consists of long ropes running down the sides of their canals made from an arcane-reactive substance.

Technological Level

Generally the technology of Jahlbar is more advanced than that of the surrounding kingdoms. Their universities have planted an appriciation of math and sciences in the populace that allows them a great deal of freedom so long as they don't run afoul of the Temple of Amman-Suul, which is also generally accepting of scientific advances. The lone exception being that most tasks in Jahlbar are undertaken by massive groups of slaves rather than any kind of technological advancement. Philosophers argue that this keeps necessary balance in society.

Religion

Religion is a massive part of the life of the average Jahlbari. The Empress of Jahlbar is the direct descendant of the Pharaoh of Telmarna who in turn is the direct descendant of the great god Amman-Suul, the ruler of all things, lord of the sun. The ruling principle of the entire state is based on Amman-Suul's favored linage and favored city, the great Telmarna. Ultimately the husband of the pharaoh his the high priest and thereby is also the seed by which her line passes on. Therefore, it is only by the will and blessing of Amman-Suul that the right and rule of the dynasty may continue.

Foreign Relations

Generally Jahlbar has a good relationship with the Dwarves, the Sabeans, and the Mariellians. They have bad relationships with the Sterii, the Gnolls, and the Elves. They are openly at war with the Sterii, from where many of the humans in this kingdom came.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture is difficult in the arid southern realm, so land which can sustain livestock and planting is in incredibly high demand and incredibly short supply. The fertile lands by the rivers and oases are incredibly valuable and many battles have been fought over them and no doubt many more will come. Industry is not exactly common in Jahlbar as most of their manufacturing is to make infrastructure to support their very large population. The most common industries are weaving and mining, weaving in the cities and mining which usually takes place in the jungle, but occasionally the desert.

Trade & Transport

Jahlbar is the center of all trade in the Inner Realms, because of the Grand Underpass and its network of canals which all boat and foot traffic follow on their eventual path to the sea. It's roads are not as complete and any place away from the canals are unlikely to have any contact with the outside world.

Education

Education is fairly excellent, especially by the standards of the Inner Realms as schooling is mandatory for all children between ages 6 and 12 based on gender with men and women being divided and taught separately based upon their societally expected roll in their life. Jahlbar also has several state-sponsored universities where both learning and research take place on subjects such as magic, arithmetic, and literature.

Infrastructure

The cities of Jahlbar have some of the best infrastructures of any of the Inner Realms. Cities have organized sanitation and regular access to clean water. Their canal roads across the empire and their communication is considered to be unique and utterly one of a kind in the Inner Realms. Their monumental buildings and tombs are admired by architects all over the world.
