Wyvern Cavalry
As one of the more unique units of the Dranyan military, the Wyvern Cavalry is a force to be reckoned with. Thanks to the manoeuvrability of their flying mounts, which are every bit as lethal as their riders thanks to their sharp teeth and claws, members of this branch of the Dranyan military can easily turn the tide of battle with proper use. However, the level of skill it takes to tame and master the riding of these wyverns, plus their vulnerability to ranged attacks, have seen to it that these units are deployed less frequently than other units in the Dranyan military.
Composition
Manpower
Due to the skill required to properly master the use of Wyverns as mounts in battle, Wyvern Cavalry make up a small part of the Dranyan military, consisting of about 2500 men and their mounts.
Equipment
All members of the Wyvern Cavalry are equipped with armour that's designed to be aerodynamic and capable of keeping the wearer warm at high altitude, and have their wyverns fitted with barding for added protection.
Weaponry
Like all other cavalry units in the world, the weaponry of the Wyvern Cavalry consists of polearms like halberds, swordstaves, and lances, though some also use bows to attack from a distance.
Vehicles
Every member of the Wyvern Cavalry is accompanied by a wyvern that they've raised and trained with from the moment they're recruited into the unit.
Structure
The Wyvern Cavalry is divided into units of about 150-200 soldiers, and communicate orders among themselves through signals.
Tactics
Due to their vulnerability to ranged units, Wyvern Cavalry never attack in open environments, preferring to attack in areas that will afford them plenty of cover on approach, like mountains, canyons, valleys, and in low-visibility conditions. When they attack they use hit and run tactics, swooping down towards the enemy to strike with blade, fang, and claw before retreating for another pass, usually snatching up some unfortunate enemies to drop while doing so.
Training
All members of the Wyvern Cavalry must be proficient in polearm combat and wyvern handling.
Logistics
Logistical Support
While all members of the Wyvern Cavalry are expected to care for their assigned wyverns, they are supported by handlers who help to provide the food, care and shelter these wyverns need to stay healthy on long campaigns. The Wyvern Cavalry are also accompanied by personnel to assist in the upkeep of the weapons and armour of both the riders and their wyverns.
Recruitment
Members of the Wyvern Cavalry are recruited from Drakai who have demonstrated a high level of skill in animal handling, with recruits that have prior experience handling wyverns being given special consideration. Additionally, recruits must demonstrate some skill in mounted combat and cavalry tactics.
