Aether Flow

As the force that governs the balance of magic in the world, the flow of Aether is one of the most vital concepts in the understanding of magic. While normally invisible to the naked eye, the impact these Aether Flows have on the world is none-the-less felt by both Mages and those who are somehow aware of the presence of Aether through various means. Whether it's a Mage casting a spell, or an Arcanix engineer building an Aether Reactor, everyone involved with magic in some degree strive to keep the Aether Flows stable, as a disrupted Flow could have disastrous results for the world.

Manifestation

Aether Flows, while ever-present throughout the world, is invisible to the naked eye. However, those who have a heightened ability to sense the presence of magic can sometimes catch a brief glimpse of these Flows, and have described them as looking like ever-shifting, multi-coloured streams of light. When the Aether in these Flows is overcharged with additional Aether, these kaleidoscopic displays of light and colour become visible for all for a a brief time.

Localization

While Aether Flows are a global force, disruptions in these flows are strictly localised to the area of these disturbances. When an Aether Flow is disrupted, it results in increased Aether anomalies, such as areas where magic either doesn't work at all, or works irregularly, mutated plant or wildlife, or any number of other anomalies. Since these anomalies can be very disastrous for those in the areas affected by them, people are careful to avoid disrupting the flow of Aether.
