Commonly called Wizards, a word from pre-
Empire times, Arcanists are the researchers and experimenters of the
Arcane and the creators of spells and magics that influences and manipulates reality.
Every
Academy-taught wizard, joined with the Tower post-graduation or having gone independent, receive stipends and research grants that more than adequately supplies them with the funds and materials they would need for their research. The one exception is the Solitarians who receive nothing of the sort.
All of these options are understood to carry the responsibility to uphold the laws of the Tower as to legal arcane research and the breaking of such rules are punishable with the lowest punishment of decades in prison to the highest punishment of necromantic torturous soul-binding post-execution.
There are few limitations that the Tower allows in the advancement of the arcane, but there do exist lines even the Tower won’t cross. An example of the pushed boundaries of the Tower is the allowance of mortal experimentation only if the consent of the mortal has been undoubtedly received.

Towerborne
The majority of the arcanists that graduate from the

Independents
While the majority of the arcanists that graduate from the
Academy join the
Tower, but a minority strike out on their own as independent wizards. The majority of independent wizards have a few options to guide their futures.
They can return to their home settlement to become an apprentice under the one of the settlement’s wizards until the time comes for them to take that mantle of that responsibility for themselves through their mentor's retirement or unfortunate death. They can also, should their settlement not have one, take the position of Wizard for themselves.
Solitaries
The minority of independent wizards go their own way, settling wherever they chose and pursue whatever arcane studies that they wish, calling themselves Solitarians. these wizards do not receive the monetary support from the
Academy that the Towerborne or Independents get.
Despite how these wizards do not receive the monetary support from the
Academy that the Towerborne or Independents get, the minority of these Solitarians have ended up becoming incredibly powerful wizards who have left their name and mark on the Empire. This is why this practice is so sought after in young arcanists; such wizards have to make their own way in the world with their own means, growing in response and opposition to challenges not often encountered in the Tower or in settlements. Such successful Solitarians who are successful have always, without fail, had a past as Adventurers, which only adds on to the mysticism and legendary past of the wandering profession.
