Sokand/Sokandia

Sokandi are soap makers of Kanda, specializing in Aleppo Style soap from the Midwest. Over the course of around 5 centuries they have been adopted from the Midwest into Kanda and have gone from a branch of specially trained slaves and contractors being ferried about the Empire to an entire class of paid, trained professional citizens that have guarded and perfected the art of soap making for generations. Highest under the Umbrella of officials that serve Kensars, Sokandi are generally very obsessive individuals that must have everything just so and have very high standards for their craft.

Career

Qualifications

While there are no hereditary guarantees, MOST Sokandi are the children of other Sokandi and so on. However, attention to detail, good timing and surefootedness and handedness are all necessary for a Sokand. Furthermore, Sokandi are NOT children and do not take children as apprentices! One must be at least 16 to start making soap. HOWEVER, if One has caught the eye of a Sokand as a child they might be exempt from military service if he so chooses to include them in his craft.
Unlike many roles in Kanda, Sokandi can be male or female and the job of both sexes is identical. Many women, even of low birth, can climb high in the ranks of society through soap.

Career Progression

At 16 one typically is chosen by a Sokand or inherits the title of Sokandi Apprentice from their father or mother.
Over the course of ten years a Sokandi Apprentice learns how to make what amounts to Aleppo Soap and is paid generous wages from their teacher for working in the shop and learning on the job. At the end of ten years a Sokand MIGHT consider addressing their apprentice's training for five more years but more often than not a decade is sufficient time to become professional grade in the craft and the apprentice becomes a proper Sokand; publicly designated by a gold sash with green trim, which they may wear anywhere they go to broadcast the nature of their position. (though MOST choose to leave their sashes at home 90% of the time)
