Domitia Auroterri Character in Ta Mando ~~ The World Of Kanda | World Anvil

Domitia Auroterri

Miss Domitia Augustad Auroterri

Strong, Tall, Beautiful and Intelligent, Domitia Auroterri is The Founder of The Twenty-Five; Think Tank to Marek of War-Saw within the Core of The Empire Of Kanda!   Born to a poor farmer on the edge of the land of Lord Sharleev Almindi I Marcosiad Essaro, she toiled under an abusive shepherd family for the first 18 years of her life before the return of The Founders Of Kanda and the arrival of The Bringer Of Fertility to her home region.

Personal history

Domitia was born the first child of a relatively poor farmer within the Core of Kanda.
Having served a mere ten years in service to The Empire, her father was given a Gume in the core; prime land considered easily above his station but he had served in a well known Weialis and thus had certain singular privileges in land selection.
However, he quickly came to find that life in The Core of Kanda was not as easy as he'd imagined! There were certain standards to be kept, expenses not found outside of the core and taxes that were not his preference. The freedoms he had hoped for in The Core were actually just as much shackles as the substandard life of Darobia Living. They merely held him down in different ways.   What was worse, the young woman he had hoped to marry had been promised away to some higher ranking soldier with more land... and he was forced to settle for a peasant woman who, while pretty and well educated in her position as wife... did not come with any form of prestige or societal gain. She did not "Impress" him and so he simply used her as any husband in Kanda without care for his family might "use" his wife...   Not even a year later, Domitia was born, though she was quickly discarded as anything important. She could never serve in the military and thus could never inherit his land. Two years after, Domitia's little sister was born and two years after that another sister. Finally, five years her junior, Domitia's little brother was born and Domitia was quickly relegated to house care and farm help as her Father doted on his only begotten son.   Domitia learned quickly to stay to herself in the fields and took to reading and writing naturally. She loved the stories that she could take in and going to the local Annar and asking if she could borrow another storybook or scroll of weaving instructions or anything to occupy her mind.
The Annar was fond of her, always allowing her to borrow whatever tome she wanted, so long as it was not concerned with matters of war or slave's means, which were below her station to bother with as a woman and a Kandia Citizen respectively.   One day her father found her reading something on the nature of anatomy and medicine. He asked why she had such a book and she told him that she wanted to learn to be a healer, maybe even an Enthiros! She would learn all about the body and perhaps train under a Mysterios and eventually she would bring honor to the family! She explained to him all she had been learning of the body and all that she had learned could be done with it!
Halfway through her excited explanations, at perhaps seven years old, he stopped her with a slap to the face that sent her to the ground.
He berated her about thinking she was better than him, telling her that as a woman she had no right to think she know more than her father and that she would be meaningless and useless for the rest of her life.   He then threw the Annar's book into the fire in front of her and made her watch it burn, telling her that her chances of being a healer were as high as that book's chances of being remade from the ashes.
The Annar, naturally, was very angry that such a valuable text was destroyed in her care and, upon talking to her father of it, refused to ever lend her a book again. Naturally he never heard the real story.
And naturally Domitia's father responded to the Annar's visit by dealing her repeated beatings.   Her mother, just as concerned with social progress as her father, neglected her sisters and her and produced three more sons. All of them had to work on the farm and manage the sheep and tend to the few cattle that they could afford but her sisters continued to toil for years.
Fortunately, her two sisters were able to be quickly betrothed and in due time they moved to their eventual husbands' estates and away from their abusive family but Domitia was too sharp of tongue, too quick to word and (according to her father) too smart to act proper. It was regarded as a disability and every suitor that turned her down earned her worse treatment, less food and more physical violence from her mother and father.
Her father had become a drunk and her mother had taken out all of the stress on her, demanding she be a proper lady and stop acting like such a man. "Your place is not to think, Domitia! It is, like mine, to serve your husband. And what use are you if you have no husband to serve?" She would tell the girl.   In due time Domitia's health would suffer from lack of regular feeding even as her strength grew and her distaste for her parents swelled to new levels
She hid within her own mind, maintaining the PERFECT illusion of stupidity whenever possible.
For a time her parents softened on her and her brothers, as they grew, looked to her to see the subservience they would come to expect in their own future brides.
For a time she was the perfect daughter... except during the visiting of Suitors, where repeatedly she would say or do something "too smart" and it would chase the potential husband away.
However... in fear that he would damage his daughter's face, her father started hitting her in the back or side or thighs as punishment for these suitor slipups but the beatings finally started to become less frequent.
For a time Domitia was starting to become comfortable being an item for her father's position in society.   And Then The Bringer Of Fertility Arrived!   Overnight Domitia's 60 acre hilly home became a luxuriant and hyper-productive farming grid full of ultra-modern farming equipment and irrigation systems!
Her home went from a modest stone and mud home to a fully modern two story house with four bedrooms and three bathrooms and a fully finished basement for extra!
Her family had cattle! Not just regular sized cattle but huge, ton heavy cattle that spilled out gallons of milk a day!
They had cheese presses that would make production safe and easy!
They had magic lights and water production like only a noble in the city might have!   And upon exploring around her father met him personally!
He met the Bringer of Fertility whilst gawking at some of the prize winning cattle... and The Bringer Of Fertility was riding a horse 26 Hands Tall!
And the Great Founder told them, "Tell the community I am looking for students! I am looking for people to learn from me. Tell them to send their smartest children and that I will choose them if they impress me!" (Gross Exaggeration)   While needing his young boys close... Domitia's father saw this as an opportunity!
The Bringer of Fertility would NEED a wife!
And he had a woman grown who he could possibly garner favor with AND secure a strong position in The Bringer Of Fertility's Family!   Realizing that the gods had been smiling upon him all along, he gathered up his daughter MORE gently and affectionately as he'd EVER shown her, fed her and informed her that she was to marry the Bringer Of Fertility.
She was, after all, smart and attractive... so she would be able to find a way to seduce him and use her feminine appearance to civilize this man "JUST like in those stories you used to love so much" and bring him into the family! She would go with HALF of his cattle, a Nal of Fur and linen and offer him the two fine horses pulling the cart... and the cart as well!
And, squeezing her wrist enough to hurt... he reminded her that he OWNED her and that she WOULD succeed in her mission. There was no alternative, no "Or else," and no potential punishment. She knew this was simply her mission and her life truly depended on it.   The terrified young woman, almost 18, (FAR Too old to have not been married in her culture yet!) drove the horses to the Bringer Of Fertility's new manor, meeting five young boys along the way. All were children of other parents who had seen the Bringer Of Fertility invite people to send their children. NATURALLY the rest of the Shar would hear by morning but they all understood what their jobs were! They were her to impress and all of them were in it together now.   Being the oldest and smartest, Domitia set them up together and helped them, as they traveled in the back of her cart, arrange a script that they would follow!
She would do the announcing of the final humbles, having no competition and thus having no bias to make any of them look better or worse. She would guide them as best as she could and she measured ALL of them to be... in some ways, at least competent!   The arrival involved... TESTS!
A stuffy old tutor slave did a lot of basic logic tests, though forgot one of them that seemed... constantly forgotten.
One child failed out of short attention.
One child, poor thing, started screaming and grabbing at his head and hallucinating. LATER he was found to be possessed by a colony of demons... but would thereafter be freed and the Shar's Mysterios would take him under his wing as an apprentice, impressed by his strong will and resistance to darkness to have fought for so long alone as just a child.   And then, to her surprise, Domitia was tested.
She was tested SAME as any of the children despite her very clearly different reason for being there.
And then... Then Marek Of War-Saw got into an argument with the stuffy old slave tutor, who was saying that she should NOT be educated because she was a woman.
And Marek of War-Saw yelled and got so angry that he nearly broke a metal table with a single hand... and the Lord Sharleev Almindi was quick to remove him privately the very next day, upon Marek's return of this slave to the lord.   Uncertain of her fate... Domitia was met by Marek, who told her that he had NO plans to marry her... but he was in love with her mind and with her ability to potentially solve problems for him.
She had passed his tests with flying colors, showing that she was more intelligent than any he'd met in this world.
And that she would tell her father that he was training her to be a proper bride "In the Style Of War-Saw" and arrange for her a marriage befitting her father's desired station.
This was, he alerted her, a lie... but one that would keep him placated and not insult him that his dowry had been returned.   And indeed, he was overjoyed at this announcement!
No beatings!
No Judgments!
No disappointment!
All he told her was that "I am so happy you put aside that mind of yours and finally have brought honor to your family by being a proper woman!"   She, who had already been told by Marek that her stupid girly acts were NOT to be tolerated... said nothing and merely took the praise as one of the last times she would EVER have to speak to him again.
She knew that her life now was not to be meek and alone.
She would raise other women like herself to intelligence and education, live up to the War-Saw expectation of what a woman could do... and she would change Kanda forever!   And if she EVER saw and had to deal with her father again she knew she would at least have the power of the Bringer Of Fertility backing her!
She could fight now!

Gender Identity

Domitia regards herself as female, though the concept of Gender Identity being separate from sex is not one that her society is terribly aware of. She therefor hasn't yet discovered any nuance in the concepts of Gender Identity.

Sexuality

She's entirely Uncertain at this point, though has a tendency to sneak into Marek's closet at night to watch him showering or changing so take that as you will. Until this point in her life Domitia has been thoroughly unimpressed by potential suitors and has never had the chance to explore who she is. Such things are not generally allowed for women in Kanda.

Education

Domitia possesses a standard education for the average female from within Kanda's Core: Reading, Writing, Basic Mathematics, Some Financial Education, Some Poetry, A Lot Of Farming Experience due to her life as the daughter of a Sheep farmer on the harsher edge of the Shar.   However, with the introduction of Marek of War-Saw, she has been granted near unlimited learning material and has utilized all modern equipment possible to speed her learning process; already having learned the very most kindergarten basics of reading and writing English and Polish in about a month with the use of electronic aids and under the guidance of Marek for at least a few hours a day.
Furthermore, a now heavily regimented schedule constructed by Marek himself ensures that she is actively learning for 12-16 Hours a day in one field or the other. In time her education will far surpass any of her family.

Employment

Domitia's present occupation is simply to learn and be part of Marek's growing group of female thinkers and prossibly spies. She works hard to ensure the loyalty and submission of The Twenty-Five and plans for the future.   However, at any given point in time Domitia is more than happy to fulfill any task that Marek gives her, so far as it is within her power to do so. If she has no way to do something by herself she may also call upon The Twenty-Five to do her bidding.

Mental Trauma

Domitia has suffered greatly at the hands of her family throughout her life, who have consistently treated her poorly for her genius and over-competence. While she used to have a social mask she would wear of the stupid, average girl, she has thrown it away since becoming apprentice to Marek and leader of The Twenty-Five and instead has started to bear a strong distaste for the mainstream, especially the shallow, feminine culture of half of Kanda's population. Moreover, she has a lot of mental scars from when her father and mother have hit her in the past for being too talkative or smart and still fights with self worth issues, though she is loathe to show or admit it.   To cover this up, Domitia near constantly takes on more than she can handle or secretly studies things without telling others; trying to hide her academic progress so that it cannot be sabotaged.

Intellectual Characteristics

Domitia is perhaps one of the most intelligent characters in Kanda thus far explored, at least when accounting strictly for intellectual talent and processing power. Whilst only just recently exploring the concept of being independent, she has embraced it quickly and seeks to be an inventor and scholar beyond any of her male peers. She possesses keen improvisational abilities and sharp social senses that allow her to put on convincing social acts for whatever scenario she needs. She can act sad or happy or smart or stupid at any given point in time, having had to master such skills under her disapproving parents to avoid repeated physical assault for being different.   Domitia is, if nothing else, completely and totally driven by her devotion to Marek's cause and to the reform of Kandia law and administration to allow more freedoms for women. She wants to deliver upon Marek's ideas that women are just as intelligent as men and are capable of performing all of the same tasks... and even more, possibly able to beat them in certain fields. She feels that determination alone can make up for any perceived biological or societal shortcoming and works hard at every waking hour to improve herself for the sake of bettering the world around her... at least as she sees it through Marek's trained philosophy.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Domitia is first and foremost driven by her loyalty to Marek of War-Saw; the man who pulled her out of her life as an abused and battered daughter of a belligerent shepherd. If he desires it of her she shall do it immediately and without hesitation!   However, beyond that, Domitia is largely driven by a stern love of reading and learning as well as a strong desire to be seen as equal and to prove to society at large that she is just as smart, strong, skilled and otherwise capable as the average man.

Social

Family Ties

Domitia has all but eschewed any previous sense of family, hating her parents and pitying her siblings for the life they are forced to live. She hates the way they lived, she hates having to acknowledge it's where she came from and she hates the idea that, at any point, her father might come and bother her for money or notoriety. She knows that she was only sent to better her family name and, at this point, she wants nothing more than to leave the name Auroterri behind or usurp it entirely and leave her father, who will expect to be the head of this name even still, behind.   Her family now is The Bringer Of Fertility and The Twenty-Five and all of the others that Marek has surrounded himself by and she's more than happy to maintain that!
Otherwise she has very few ties to any specific families, having been isolated much of her life on the farm at the mountainside edge of the Shar.

Religious Views

While perhaps a bit of a cynic at heart, Domitia certainly holds the Pantheonic System of the Kandia Gods very close to her heart and puts as much credit in the existence of local deities and rituals as the next girl, especially after the arrival of The Bringer Of Fertility and the complete changing of life for everyone in her life!
While perhaps not a direct worshiper of the Unconquered Sun, it was a part of her life, as her father is a "True Believer."   True to many within a hundred miles of The Capital, Domitia takes the veneration of the "Core Deities" very seriously and has a small shrine in her closet in reverence of The Patron Deity Of Kanda Sentran.
She doesn't pray to it but does leave small offerings silently to it in every few mornings or nights.

Social Aptitude

If anything can be said about Domitia it is that she is socially capable and able to change her perceived mood and demeanor at the drop of a hat, having long mastered putting on faces for her family to avoid punishment.
Moreover, she is incredibly confident with this and, as of late, has become all but abrasive in her interactions with others in the safety and security of Marek's home; though she is careful not to bring too much suspicion.   Perfectly capable of understanding and adhering to the highest of etiquette, Domitia OFTEN eschews such conventions when in a place of comfort; walking about the house in her underwear, lying on furniture with her legs spread while blasting the television, drinking orange juice straight from the bottle and being generally standoffish to those she knows she can be intimidating to.
Now, with her newfound sense of independence and recognition in her intelligence, Domitia has become much more confident and satisfied with her life, though perhaps at the risk of a drastically inflated ego and an awakening to all the pent up anger and rage at her family that she often finds difficult to control and hasn't yet found a way to properly work out.

Mannerisms

Domitia uses many hand gestures when talking; waving of the arms, shrugging, embellished movements and various hand signs she's either made herself or collaborated upon with the rest of the Twenty-Five. While some have hidden meanings and can capably be utilized as sign language to those who understand the motions, no less than half of all of her hand motions are simply emotive gestures.
