Civiandus / Civiandia Profession in Ta Mando ~~ The World Of Kanda | World Anvil

Civiandus / Civiandia

The Civiandus is one of the most universal images in all of Kanda!
If you are in a city, chances are that it was designed and lain out by a Civiandus and that another Civiandus directed all of the building of each house and a different one of all of the market stalls and buildings in the town square and so forth!
The bathhouses are designed by Civiandia!
The Roads are laid out and their building overseen by Civiandia!
The fortresses, castles, and manors that dot the territory from the core to the harshest borders are all, of course, built and designed by Civiandia!   The Civiandus is a Specialized Civil Engineer normally chosen from particularly gifted and skilled ranks of the military that has dedicated himself to the construction and design of buildings in the truest Kandia fashion; The creation of the highest function with utmost efficiency and the maintenance of all manner of civilian and military systems alike!

Career

Qualifications

A Civiandus requires a ready understanding of mathematics and measurements! Typically one receives all they need to become a Civiandus during military service but only those that excel at surveying, planning, architecture and organization are chosen to rise in the ranks of Civiandia training. However, a Child with a keen mind for measurements, distance, inventory and a good memory might be taken under the wing of a Civiandus and taught from as young as 6. These apprentices, once they join military service, tend to excel in their more physical training; having already been schooled in the proper methods of building and surveying from their childhood.

Career Progression

Typically starting out in the military, aspiring Civiandia are very often caught quickly by the command structure, excelling in both physical endeavors and requiring little in the way of training in measuring, surveying and excavating. Those with keen interest in these such things are often removed from the more conventional forces and incorporated into more engineering based divisions, often at the walls on the siege weapons and artillery or toward the center of a marching column so as to immediately be called for emergency construction methods in the case of an attack.   If these aspirants do well and impress their trainers as they are taught to make field artillery, siege additions and defensive structures faster than normal troops they will be selected for actual training into the Civiandia proper.
Training as a Civiandus is extremely mentally taxing and thereafter the aspirant will be forced to memorize countless templates, structural designs, architecture texts and other such educational material, all the while forced to march and do mostly the same duties as any other soldier. They are assigned considerable required reading material as well; forced to balance standard soldier time with their more constructive educational assignments for the benefit of their unit.
Many such aspirants drop out of this training and go back to manning field artillery and other more standard soldier duties.   However, those that do succeed at memorizing and putting to good use the many templates, designs and educational assignments granted to them will finally be recognized as PROBATIONARY Civiandia!
From there on out, under the supervision of their betters, the young Civiandia will go to continuing at least ten years of military service, though many find such security and kinship in the military that they stay their entire 25 year terms and beyond!   Once they finish their first term of service nobody can possibly deny one's existence as a Civiandus, for they will have had to erect and tear down hundreds of Castania by that time, designed new types of buildings and will have had to improvise things perhaps thousands of times over upon the field of battle over the past decade! Normally they leave into society once again with good respect and a high chance of being quickly snatched up by a receptive lord who wants a fresh but still experienced builder in their new land! Many of the Civiandia's own best friends, having retired from service with them, might invite them back to their new farmlands and give them homes until they themselves find reason to start families.   Due to the roving nature of Many Civiandia, they choose to forego their military land rewards and instead take more money and travel into cities and around the nation to take commissions from various lords who need builders.
If a Civiandus finds himself successful in this venture, it might satisfy them for their entire life.
If A Civiandus happens to be more eccentric and turns an eye to the artistic they might even end up becoming a Partaneros!

Payment & Reimbursement

As with most military soldiers, most Civiandia start out being paid rather standard wages, with slight bumps because of their necessary nature on the field for things like sapping, field artillery and erecting quick fortifications during battle. Because of this a Civiandus can normally count on getting about 20% more pay on average than the standard Leconis. However, they are also expected to pay for more items out of their own pocket in the field and this generally evens things out. Civiandia are also allowed more slaves per individual to help with carrying building materials and the like, but are expected to maintain the health and provisions of said extra slaves out of their own money. Because of this an actively serving Civiandus should not be thought of as a very wealthy individual but might stand a step above the average soldier in having a bit more pocket change in their purse to spend at the brothels or on various camp provisions. MOST Civiandus do not, however, live much more lavishly than any other Leconia whilst on campaign.   Non-Military Civiandia, however, tend to live a bit more lavishly. Being well in demand and having important and well maintained skills still in mind, newly retired military Civiandus quickly find themselves paid handsomely to come and stay on modest but quickly rising estates that require them to lay out and oversee the construction of new buildings and works of infrastructure. Often these Civiandia go quickly from a life of having known only silver to one pervaded by Gold Coins and Jade Notes!

Other Benefits

Whilst Civiandia on Campaign are often considered responsible for their own effects and, unless they are explicitly high ranking officers, do not garner many more benefits than the average Leconia save that they might have a touch more time to themselves if they play their cards right. However, good service as a Civiandus at war can lead to very quick promotion and thus the privilege of rank may come more quickly than normal to those canny Civiandia with the motivation to advance!   Perhaps more importantly, Civilian Civiandus may find themselves invited to many eloquent manors to expand the properties responsibly or even be requested to live freely at great estates wherein they will serve as Live-In engineers, serve in the lord's court and presumably have their own allotment of land where they will have their own family and need not be taxed by the lord, for they are paid to live there in both food and money!
If A Civiandus chooses to take their own land as reward for military service, they might very quickly find themselves in a similar relationship with the local lord; constantly offered only the best of service and hospitality by their superiors in hopes that they might get closer and do fine work for a more luxurious life at home!

Perception

Purpose

A Civiandus is, by all means, A Civil Engineer. Civiandia manage the placement of roads, structures, sewers, other public services and how they shall be built. They also survey the land for potential locations to erect Castania.   Indeed if there is something that needs to be done in the departments of building, planning, designing or any of the strictly manual labors there's a very real chance it is being headed by a Civiandus that had the idea to do so in the first place or that is serving a lord who needs his architectural discipline.

Social Status

The Civiandus is a highly valued and well regarded profession both in and out of military service; being responsible for the planning and keeping of architecture and civil engineering, which are regarded as the highest and most important parts of Kanda's cultural identity! As one who not only builds but maintains this, at accomplished Civiandus can often expect invitations to private manors, dinners and hunting events to be talked at by all sorts of interested family heads seeking to gain their expertise on upcoming projects.   Moreover, Civiandia are generally regarded as so necessary that many communities are not considered complete without at least one and with that one having at least one apprentice as well.

Demographics

Perhaps 5-10% of all Kandia, in any given generation, at least have some form of Civiandia training. Most of these are not strictly labeled Civiandia but might instead be Leconia that aspired to the structured and constructive lifestyle but fell short and now serve on artillery crews or as trench foremen and leading organizers in various Fimatia and Kinatia throughout the ranks.   In actuality it is much more likely that only about 1-3% of any given population is composed of more serious practitioners of architecture, being an incredibly common profession that you literally cannot find a community without. While perhaps not mandated by law, the very process that all men have to go through to be accepted as proper citizens of Kanda ensures that there are never any shortages of specialized architects and designers.
Many Kandia even assert openly that this is what makes Kanda more civilized than many other nations.

History

When the armies of Kanda first mobilized under the Father Of War, he had already cleared out much of the surrounding area from Kanda Sentran and it was not necessary to do much more than protect their homes and mobilize formal militias to march against sleights to the community. However, as their rule continued and time went by, The Founders realized that a proper army of Kanda would be needed... and that this army would need to be as self sufficient as it could be; for the people didn't serve the army, the army served the people. But in order to facilitate this true army, The Early Kandia would have to set up lines of infrastructure and trade! They would have to build the way to new sites and ready the land for civilians to come and use it.   And they would need roads and Walls wherever they went!   So The Father Of War spoke with the Builder Of Cities and asked if he might be able to help.
The Builder of Cities instituted rules for all Leconia, including the requirement to carry the Standard Kit, including but not limited to the pick, shovel, surveying gear and other such important means of construction and clearing the land.
Over time The Builder Of Cities would work with The Father Of War to construct many templates for buildings, roads, safe camping sites and small fortresses to protect the soldiers that would protect the rest of the nation. Standard rules and codes of conduct for legions would be enacted and general schedules for the day would be mandated. And those soldiers who would excel at the building, surveying, managing of stocks and inventory and being foremen over other workers would be selected to manage and maintain the traditional building styles of the people. They would be the civil engineers, plumbers, builders, and craftsmen of MILITARY precision and would henceforth hold the highest office of architecture in the Empire!   These especially talented and skilled architects and civil engineers would come to be known as "Civiandia."

Operations

Tools

The Civiandus uses trowels, shovels and anything else a Leconis might use from their standard kits but far more precisely and extensively as well as being provided (for a reasonable price from the Kensaria) specialized handling tools, higher grade equipment and all manner of educational equipment and material that they are expected to memorize and utilize on the fly in the field.   Some Civilian Civiandia can even be known to use small cranes, special pulley rigs and magical aid but this is for the higher class of Civiandus and the average Civiandus generally prefers to use the tried and true power of steel excavation and building tools rather than the subtle and sometimes less than reliable nature of certain magical items to complete their tasks.

Materials

Dirt, Stone, Wood, Metal and Glass are all the main materials that a Civiandus finds necessary to do anything in their profession!
On Campaign a Civiandus might well prefer to focus on Dirt, Stone and Wood but Civilians inevitably start distancing themselves from wood and dirt and preferring metal for the construction and reinforcement of large structures and glass for the adornment and opening up of lavish estates.   Concrete, of course, is an ever popular material of use and maintains importance throughout the entirety of a Civiandia Career. While they can be picky, they are not usually picky about the quality of such materials, as it is the hallmark of a quality Civiandus to be able to make do with whatever materials they have, regardless of scarcity or difficulty.

Workplace

The Place of Work for a Civiandus is "Outside!" Their job being to lay down roads and clear land for buildings and set up structures and create fortifications, the Civiandus is often walking the land somewhat leisurely, imagining of new grids, structures and layouts for the land; foreseeing the building of walkways and the fencing of fields for farming and the digging of ditches for plumbing.
When at work they tend to walk amongst the laborers and even labor themselves and if they feel the need for shade or have to sit down to read it is far more often that they have a handful of slaves nearby to pull up a tent where they can go over their many templates and civil plans before heading back out into the job site.   Perhaps most important to remember is that Civiandia are almost universally soldiers and are familiar with construction under pressure! An experienced and well trained Civiandus might well don armor and shield and sharpen his shovel to better serve him not just in construction but in battle, able to form up with each other and use sharpened shovels and tunnel supports as impromptu spears, set up quick fortifications whilst under charge and order "Counter-Build" Actions in direct opposition to advancing enemies where they can defeat an enemy force whilst using their own equipment and dead bodies to build defensive structures!

Provided Services

As mentioned in most other sections, The Civiandus is a position dedicated to building, planning and laying out properly ordered construction!
For the right price a Civiandus might plan out an irrigation network, a manor for one's estate, construct a wall along one's border or even dig secret tunnels under one's property so as to allow swift escape in the event of an enemy incursion. They can have ditches dug, have factories erected and can even redirect a river or build a lake with the correct payment and staff!   Indeed in the world of a Civiandus, so long as it is the world of the physical, they are paid to do almost anything around a property that has to do with construction!

Dangers & Hazards

While anyone can understand the dangers of the Civiandus on Campaign they might not understand that construction in general is a very difficult profession and the more dangerous aspects like inspecting mines, digging tunnels, redirecting rivers and working on tall structures claim countless Civiandia every year as they seek to either outdo their competition, impress their clients or simply do their job to the best of their abilities.   People fall, large boxes of heavy materials topple onto unsuspecting victims and wells are thin, long passages so deep that people can die in them without proper ventilation. Even the tools that the average Civiandus uses are easily capable of chopping off a finger or accidentally swinging back too far and nailing someone in the head.
Everything about the job is, to some degree, dangerous and there are no shortage of hazards for those who dedicate their lives to building things!
Type
Engineering
Demand
The Civiandus Is A Staple. A Civiandus is never too far if one is in Kandia Territory
Legality
Civiandia are not legally mandated or anything like that but their existence in the military is almost obligatory. If one is found with talent in the field they WILL be sent through the proper training!
Most importantly, Civiandia run off of legally approved templates and standards that they learn in their training and any designs that they utilize that have not been made by them personally are likely based off of templates that have been explicitly reviewed and approved by specialists in The Capital: Kanda Sentran.
