Necklace of the Inner Eye

A magical item to disguise the wearer. While wearing it, the person's external appearance is they wish it to be, within certain tolerances. The talisman is always visible, making it obvious to those in the know of such jewelry.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

While the talisman is being worn, the person's outer appearance matches how they want themselves to be perceived, to a degree. A woman of Linthalia may appear to be from the more frigid lands of Gresh. An Elf may appear as a drow, or vice versa, if they choose. Size and stature are harder to pull off; a halfling could make themselves appear as a Goblin, but not their Orc cousins, or vice versa. It also does not remove any particular anatomy: people may not be able to see the horns of Tiefling while wearing the talisman, but they will always be there. This also goes for more private pieces of anatomy   The talisman does require some degree of focus and concentration; those without a steady mind, such as those who become intoxicated, may find that their outward appearance changes in front of people, or that the illusion dissapears entirely.

Rarity
Necklaces and talismans such as these are rare by nature of their magical quality, but are still far more common than other magical items, even in the field of jewelry. The spell itself is common illusionary magic, that most any wizard would be able to cast. The talismans themselves can be made entirely from mundane metals or stones. The rarity therefore comes predominantly from the limited use of application, the cost to create.

The most common place to find such necklaces are among the aristocracy, vain middling or elderly women wear such items to maintain the illusion of perpetual youth, or, when that is no longer possible or in good taste, to at least appear a decade or two younger than they truly are.   There has been a recent uptick in their popularity in the last century or so, commensurate with the end of The Triumverate War. With the dawn of the Tieflings, many find the world hostile against them, just being who and what they are. Families with the money and contacts procure these items for their demon-blooded family members, if a person is not of age to do it themselves, so they can blend into a society that would otherwise hate them or even seek to destroy them.
