Khartoum

A mostly human monarchical kingdom along the western coast of the continent. An Imperial vassal state, Khartoum begrudgingly maintains independence by paying tribute to Intransica as well as lip service to it's propaganda. With ocean alony it's western coast and The Lake of Tears to the East, it is a uniquely naval power, as well as wedged between many different forces and cultures.

Structure

Khartoum maintains limited sovereignty, with much of its direction being received from the representatives claiming to speak for The Immortal Emperor. Within the Monarchy, there is a , who directs a collection of regional Barons to govern.

Demography and Population

The Monarchy of Khartoum is predominantly human in population. along the border areas, pockets of Elvish settlements have become successful. Hammerdeep Dwarves from the Northeast have immigrated into Khartoum. Curiously, although they are notoriously opposed to ocean travel, they have a solid reputation in ship building.   Orc refugees from Intransica have made Khartoum home. Part of the arrangement with them is that Khartoum would not accept them as citizens. The monarchy has been coy with this arrangement, claiming it infeasible to determine when anyone may have migrated or been born in the country. Honoring the letter but not the spirit has saves lives, and the Orcs are thankful for the chance of a new life, even if it does mean adopting a means very different from their old lives. They've made a strong showing of cooperation with Dwarves in the shipyards.

Military

Khartoum has a rare problem in effectively having to manage two separate navies. the West fleet operates in the grand Ocean alongside the Eternal Empire and Linthalia, while the East Flotilla functions in the Lake of Tears. The West Fleet is the larger emphasis, providing deterrent against Intransica. There's a growing threat of piracy that the force is trying to mitigate, from the bastard isles. The East Flotilla functions mostly in coastal defense and patrol from raiders and illegal fishing in Khartoum waters.   As far as the army is concerned, the greatest concern is protecting the border to the North from further invasion from Intransica. Given that the Empire limits their force in order to enable exactly the outcome, if needed, the Royal Army tries to maximize their effectiveness despite numerical disadvantages with superior training, creating defensive earthworks, and supplying the army with magical arms, when possible.   With the Bronzebark disagreement mostly settled, the remainder of the concern comes from the Sukan Khanate to the East. They largely keep to themselves, but raiders and the like are known to enter Royal lands.

Foreign Relations

Prior to the Triumverate War, Khartoum had a minor war with the Bronzebark Elves. Krakorum had grown overly ambitious with industrial production and cleared wide swaths of forest for ship building. The process was scarring the land permanently and had even killed some of the Elves in the area. A violent retaliation ensued, lead by the young prince Yalph, who was personally aggrieved by the destruction. Cooler minds would find a means to prevent greater conflict. After peace was settled and the Triumverate War passed, the territorial dispute was relatively forgotten about, even if reputations remain. Elves, with their long lives, still view Khartoum as being locusts, consuming everything, while they tend view elves of being overly judgemental and prone to harbor grudges.   Khartoum was spared the invasions of The Intransican Empire thanks to distance and protective geography. To end the war with their sovereignty intact, Khartoum agreed to play tribute to Intransica. Although the monarchy can continue to pay for the foreseeable future, the people are becoming increasingly tired of it, especially the merchant class.

Agriculture & Industry

Khartoum is a heavily industrial nation, with the consumption to power that industry having caused war with Bronzebark. It's largest industry is in ship building and the various supportive industries, including the making of powerful shipboard cannons.

Trade & Transport

Getting from the west to east coasts, or north to Southern borders, is a complicated web of roads. The varied ways does provide more transients to visit and provide funds to local towns and cities, but also diminishes the Monarchys own ability to swiftly respond to a national crisis.

Currency
As a vassal state of Intransica, Khartoum uses Imperial gold coins for its business and trade. Royal coins issued before the war are still accepted, despite rules against it, but after two centuries, are rare to be found in the economy. It is common for Khartoum nationalists to pursue and hold onto these Royal coins as an implicit sign of rebellion and desire to divorce from Imperial control.
Major Imports
Khartoum does heavy trade in Linthalia. Maiden Tea is a common import, but far from the only. Linthalian ports bring in goods from nearly all other corners of the world, allowing for all manner of exotic goods to be brought I'm, at the right price.   Hlysan bows are brought in from the south via Royal trade ships, and are often brought to the border with Intransica
Legislative Body
an aristocratic council provides recommendations to the King for policy and laws. They can ultimately be ignored, or even disbanded. Their power is even more limited considering the legal subordination to Intransica. Membership in the council is inherited through noble lines.

Vassal State

Krakorum maintains its independance from the Eternal Empire by paying lip service to its dogmatic propaganda and sending vast amounts of its trade wealth into Imperial coffers.   The Empire sees the monarchies independance as an annoyance more than any true threat. The gains for invasion are outweighed by the cost, so typical logic dictates.
