The Balance of the Universe

The universe is filled with two types of energies, positive and negative energy. Positive energy is heat and the force of creation while negative energy is cold and the force of destruction. Positive energy is not necessarily "good", while negative energy is not necessarily "bad". The Aether above is filled with positive energy, while the Nether below is filled with negative energy. The Material Plane has an equal net concentration of positive and negative energy, but the concentration varies from place to place. The balance of positive and negative energy leads to many natural phenomena like gravity, wind, and earthquakes, as consequence of the Three Fundamental Laws of Energy.

Magic and Energy

All magic derives power from positive and negative energy. Spell casters are gifted, through study or natural talent, at manipulating these energies, and most casters have a higher natural ability in manipulating positive energy.
Often, spell casters can accomplish the same goal with a clever use of positive or negative energy. For example, a wizard who is trying to shield himself from an arrow shot by an enemy could create an obstacle to intercept the arrow (positive) or destroy the arrow before it strikes him (negative). However, there are cases where only one type of magic can reach a goal, such as a cleric healing a wound (positive) or removing a disease (negative).
Most spell casters keep a reserve of energy inside an Isocrystal.

The Three Fundamental Laws of Energy

Every spell caster knows the Three Fundamental Laws of Energy. Those who were naturally born with talent quickly intuit how energy works, whereas those who study magic are drilled with exercises and calculations related to the energies.

1. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it merely changes states.
2. Positive energy is naturally, but weakly, drawn towards additional positive energy. Negative energy is naturally, but weakly, pushed away from additional negative energy. Positive and negative energy are attracted towards one another.
3. When positive and negative energy come into contact, their effects cancel out based on the quantity of energy present. If there is more of one energy present than the other, then the more plentiful energy will take effect. Once separated, the positive and negative effects will resume.

Natural Phenomena as Manifestations of the Second Law

The Second Law explains natural phenomena in the world. For example, the constant shifting of positive and negative energy in the atmosphere give rise to wind. The flow of positive energy towards the negative energy of the Nether causes gravity. Earthquakes occur when too much negative energy builds up in a region of the Nether and it violently pushes away from itself.

Energies and the Gods

The Aether gods are beings of pure positive energy, but the Nether gods are more complicated. The Nether gods are beings of positive energy that have filled themselves with negative energy, like an Isocrystal. This arrangement grants the Nether gods an affinity for destruction, and the ability to create tools to accelerate destruction. As the Nether gods create, however, they lose their positive energy. Followers of the Nether gods participate in sacrifices in their names to give them more positive energy.
