The Fisherman's Folly Myth in Talthei | World Anvil

The Fisherman's Folly

The Fisherman's Folly is a prophecy divined by a future oracle of Lii, a spirit of compassion and foresight. In it, the woman tells of a man who, desperate to aid a little girl he hears calling while at sea, rides his fishing boat into the fog. The little girl calls him deeper and deeper into the fog, hitting a point so dense nothing can be seen. The voice stops, and in his despair the fisherman rests in his boat and waits for morning to come burn off the fog. From the depths, a two-headed figure arose from the fog. As the man slept, tendrils of water rose from the deep, reaching towards the skies before shooting down and ripping the boat apart.   The woman, distressed at the vision she saw, confided in her husband, who promised to warn all his fellow fisherman. While he didn't so much believe it as more than a bad dream, he did wish to comfort his wife, and so when he left that morning, he told those at the dock of his wife's dream. The men and women chuckled, all understanding the stresses the sea can put on their loved ones, and then left for a full day of fishing the waters around their island home.    Just as he was about to turn home for the day, a splashing noise and a child's wail filled the air. Immediately, he yelled out, trying to find out where the child was. However, looking around, he saw that he was far away from any of the other boats, and the land was a speck in the distance. Turning back around, he could see the fog beginning to roll in over the chilly waters. He scanned the horizon again, and although the noise seemed to close, there was no spot a child could land from, nor could he see any marks on the surface to signal where a person would be. He sailed a little further, calling for the child who still sobbed.    As the sun sunk under the horizon and he faced the edge of the fog, his wife's tearful recollection of her dream struck him. In the back of his mind, he knew something was wrong. It was time to honor his wife's vision and go home.

Very nice! I'm eager to learn about the woman's journey to become an oracle. If she had any self doubts, had to overcome disdain, etc.
