Liege of the Loons
Appointment
This title is given by the children of Milgram at the All-Night Feast. During the festivities, people will take turns telling their greatest sea tales to the children as they eat and play. At the end of the story tellings, the children chat among themselves and decide who told the best story. That person is, until next year's competition, affectionately known as the "Liege of the Loons," a reference to Milgram's children, nicknamed Loons for the area's almost ubiquitous veneration of Eterra.
Duties
The Liege of the Loons primary duty is that of a mood maker. After being vetted by the children, the Liege gets to kick off storytelling to the whole festival (as compared to the people around the storyteller, like inevitably happens before with a town full of fishermen). They are expected to feed the energy of the festival by entertaining and encouraging the crowds, who are known to cheerfully yell and tease the Liege.
Responsibilities
The Liege of Loons is the master of stories for the festival. Once they are betitled, they are to gratefully accept whatever gifts are given to them (typically the crown made from children's contributions) and re-telling their story to the festival as a whole, often lightening the atmosphere even more with the heckling and cheers from the full group of festival-goers.
Benefits
The Liege of Loons is viewed quite favorably in Milgram, often getting a free snack or a better deal on trades.
Accoutrements & Equipment
There is no official regalia associated with the Liege of the Loons. However, it has become tradition for each child to find and contribute a shell. These shells are taken to one of the older people in the village who use them to craft a crown from wires, fishnets, and sea goods.
