Level One: Sunlit Abyss

The Sunlit Abyss is the uppermost layer of the Swordfall Rift, bathed in soft, filtered sunlight that penetrates from the entrance high above. This level is relatively safe and serves as a transition between the surface world and the deeper, more treacherous layers of the rift. Adventurers who venture into the rift often use this level as a training ground and a source of valuable resources.   The rift entrance, framed by the colossal Endweaver sword, allows sunlight to filter down in dappled rays. The illumination is gentle and warm, creating an otherworldly ambiance in the depths below. Despite the subterranean environment, hardy plants and mosses thrive here due to the filtered sunlight. The flora includes luminous fungi, delicate ferns, and hardy vines that cling to the walls and provide sustenance for those who forage.   The climate on this level is relatively temperate, with mild temperatures and lower humidity than above in Bladehaven due to its depth. Adventurers can expect a comfortable environment, making it an ideal location to rest and gather supplies.   The Sunlit Abyss is considered a haven for newcomers and serves as a starting point for expeditions. It is a place where adventurers can safely establish makeshift camps and gather essential materials before descending deeper.   It is reached using a system of elevator-like pulleys that lower and rise on command, swaying gently on ropes anchored in Bladehaven.    DANGERS:   Although infrequent, minor seismic activity can shake the Sunlit Abyss. Adventurers must be cautious of falling debris and unstable terrain during these tremors.   Some creatures adapted to the gentle sunlight lurk in this level. They use the dappled light to their advantage, ambushing prey and scavenging from unwary travelers.   The walls of the rift can be treacherous to navigate, with steep cliffs and narrow ledges. Adventurers must exercise caution while climbing and take care not to dislodge loose rocks.

Fauna & Flora

  • Mossy Emberthorn: This low-lying plant has velvety, crimson moss covering its stems and roots. When threatened or touched, the Emberthorn emits a puff of spores that ignite into harmless, fiery sparks, creating dazzling displays.
  • Hollowvine Canopies: These sturdy vines hang from the rift's ceiling, forming natural canopies. Within these canopies, small communities of moss-dwelling creatures build their nests, creating a mini-ecosystem above the forest floor.
  • Lustrous Fungus Forest: Luminescent fungi of various sizes and colors carpet the ground, some as large as trees. They release bioluminescent spores that softly light the way and attract small insects, forming a bustling ecosystem of fungivores.
  • Glimmerwing Moths: These ethereal insects have wings that resemble stained glass windows, refracting sunlight into brilliant colors. They flutter about, sipping nectar from the Shimmerleaf flowers and adding to the area's enchanting ambiance.
  • Crystalfin Geckos: Small, lizard-like creatures with translucent, gem-like scales. They cling to the walls using adhesive toes and feed on crystal formations, breaking them down into digestible minerals.
  • Abyssal Owlbats: These nocturnal, owl-like creatures are adorned with bioluminescent feathers that mimic the starry night sky. They hunt under the cover of darkness, their silent wings carrying them through the shadows.

Natural Resources

  • Luminescent Shimmerleaf: These large, heart-shaped leaves glisten in the filtered sunlight. When disturbed, they release a gentle bioluminescent glow that illuminates the surroundings. Adventurers often use Shimmerleaf leaves as makeshift lanterns.
  • Lanternjelly Blooms: Floating in the pools of water that collect in the Sunlit Abyss, these gelatinous, semi-transparent organisms resemble aquatic flowers. They emit a gentle, soothing light and filter impurities from the water.
  • Prismatic Tumblebeetles: Small, iridescent beetles that feed on the spores of the Luminescent Shimmerleaf. Their carapaces refract light into mesmerizing patterns, making them highly sought after for decorative purposes.
  • Glowwood Timber is a luminescent, fungal material harvested from the dense mushroom forests of the Sunlit Abyss. It is highly prized for its unique properties, making it a valuable resource for adventurers and craftsmen. The timber naturally emits a soft, gentle glow, casting a dim light in dark environments. This property makes Glowwood Timber ideal for crafting lanterns, torches, and other light sources. Glowwood Timber is surprisingly lightweight, making it easy to carry and work with. It is favored by those who need durable yet portable materials for construction and crafting. Despite its lightweight nature, Glowwood Timber is remarkably strong and resistant to decay. It can withstand exposure to moisture and remains stable over time, even in challenging conditions.
