Growing up in a cult, usually leaves people with strange outlooks on life. But Sonny had an extra special cult responsible for rearing him. They believed in being free, communing with nature, and the eventual collapse of society.They held up in a remote location deep in the wilderness, away from what they thought would turn into epicenters of roaming bands of desperate people. They learned how to track, fight, trap, forage, and hunt. Sonny learned all of this too, until he could do it in his sleep.
But he never liked it there and was curious about the rest of the world. He'd often sneak out to see the doomed world and never saw what was described. At 14 he escaped to have a normal life, and the reporters who heard his stories offered him a fresh perspective and kind words. They left an impression on him that made him eventually go into journalism himself. After graduating college he landed a job for a small newspaper that went after big fish. He spent years chasing after a corrupt CEO who always covered his tracks. But he finally got him, he had enough evidence to print and to turn into the police for an investigation.
He first turned the evidence in to his boss so he could ok the print. He was proud of his work, finally catching someone dead to rights. His boss made some calls to some tv stations to make sure they would catch it all. Sonny lost a lot to this investigation, some friends disappeared and girlfriends mysteriously dying. He finally had some hope, but on his way to the police station he was chased off the road. Surviving and escaping the car before it exploded, watching from a safe distance he heard the driver talking to his boss. His boss had offered him up on a silver platter to the CEO, for a large mount of cash. Knowing all that he lost for this report and to still be betrayed he lost his mind. Retreating to a point in his head where he was safe, back when he was in the cult.
