Leviathan Species in Superia | World Anvil

Leviathan

Perhaps it should be expected that things would turn for the worst when skies remained clear and the waters calm. After all, the Sleeping Seas were so called both for the quietness and what awaited when it woke.   "Captain, starboard!" First Mate Jhuria yelled for me, taking my attention from instructing the new sailors on knots and cannon cleaning. Another time, I might be greatful.   It didn't take long to know what the brute meant: A dark cloud flying from starboard straight for our ship. Pickers. "HARPONS AND CANNONS OUT! LOOK ALIVE PEOPLE!" To expect an eventless travel through Morphisean Sea was indeed the wish for miracles.   As the birds approached and the cloud seemed to never end, I could feel my heart and stomach dancing at the pit of my belly. The only beast capable of feeding a flock that big was tales of children's nightmare. Hoping that my crew didn't arrive at the same assumption, I sent a prayer for the Maker... Please give us a quick death, for there was no surviving it.   A Leviathan.
— Filiard Adventures Vol 2 - Nightmares of the Sea
A rare sight for ships and earth dwellers, this sea monster is the origin of many catastrophies. Found around the world in deep waters, the Leviathan spend most of their life on the Morphisean Sea, the largest and deepest sea of Superia.   Records of captured and observed leviathans estimate an average of 36 meters (around 120 feet) long and over 100 tonnes heavy. The habitat and anatomy make it ever so hard to actually capture and study them in more detail, having no confirmed instance of capture of a living specimen.   This creature is an apex predator, with no knowing threats to its continued existance. Capable of staying an estimated of three years without eating, their diet often include deep sea fish and whales, on rare occasions supplemented by deep sea plant- and fungi-life.   Leviathan have an thick and hard skin, almost scaly. Large hollow bone structure is estimated from remains examined by researchers, including a skull kept in the underwater city of Uarimanda, in the Morphisean Sea. Their mouths are capable of spliting carracks in two, or even sinking more than a few galleons.

Myths and Legends

As a long living apex predator, the Leviathan is featured in many tales and myths, the most notorious a tale of the first King of Uarimanda. The monarh, unifier of the largest undersea civilization, had been a zoolinguist and physically enhanced super that, as tales would say, took a leviathan as companion to her conquering of Morphisean Sea.
