Veleen

In Vielene/Valgrozna, there are generally agreed to be two cultures. The Veleen happen to be the ones who lost basically every conflict the two ever had, and a few more besides that.   History tends to be mixed when looking at these cultures. At one point in the distant past, the Veleen were the leaders, but eventually the Grozni took power, and then after that the balance of power never really changed. Judging from some of the language at the time, the Veleen had not been particularly benevolent leaders, but going by what we know of the Grozni after, they also failed to be merciful.   The Veleen ended up being a part of the ruling class for quite a while, mainly because of the Grozni obsession with balance and fairness. Eventually they were basically subsumed into the dominant culture, leaving the middle and lower class Veleen to carry on cultural traditions.   This started the string of them picking the wrong hills to die on. Peasant uprising fails? They were the peasants. Peasant uprising succeeds? Likely against a Veleen noble. Problems with bandit raids? Veleen merchants lose all their money. Bandits arrested and executed? They were Veleen. The inconsistency at least meant that developing stereotypes as to the social class or intelligence of the Veleen didn't become much of a thing.   But it did put them pretty much on the bottom of the Valgrozna society, and gave them something of a reputation for being unlucky.   They tend to be more insular than the Grozni, being the driving force behind the bubble that was made around the whole country during various gnarly world events. And they're a lot more community based, with small to medium sized groups sticking together. Didn't really help when people started accusing the Grozni of segregation later (which was fair because they totally ran with those cultural tendencies and took it to their own advantage).   (part of ruling class but that was about it, kept picking the losing side) (what ideals, what makes them different from the grozni)
