Magic in a World of Science

Just because we don't understand it, doesn't make it magic.   Yeah, well, the fact that it's a separate accessible force does.

Magic is a real thing. It's not something we have much cause to use on Earth, or indeed most other places in the galaxy that have access to superpowers, but it's real. Under the right conditions, using the correct access motions, items, and words, someone can use abilities beyond their own to accomplish extraordinary things.   Granted, those things are never as spectacular as a specialist with the genetic capacity for something, but it is more universally available which makes it appealing.

Magic or Superpower?

The answer can be tricky since in some people the tendency toward an ability to use magic is a part of their power set. However, most people still classify it as something separate, and the reasons are generally as follows.
  1. Magic requires the use of some kind of formula to use it, whether in the form of spell words or in an elaborate gesture, typically combined with a focusing object.
  2. Magic does not require a genetic component (although some individuals have been observed to have more power and intuitive connection to magic than others).
  3. Magic has more side effects.
Some people argue for a fourth item, that magic tends to be less powerful than superpowers on average, but most take the point that superpowers can be so variable, and whoever has them has specialized enough in their abilities that of course they'll be more skilled and thus likely demonstrate more power.

Why Not More Magic?

You would think that more people would use magic, since from most accounts it's simply any superpower you want, so long as you're prepared. But no.   First of all, magic requires accessing an energy that isn't particularly available on Earth. It exists in limited quantities that self-generate after a certain amount of time. The spells involved can include some words difficult to pronounce unless you speak a broad variety of languages. The things needed simply aren't accessible to the average person.   Second, thanks to various modern literature, people are downright dumb about how magic should work. The misconceptions push it further out of reach.

Amazing job this article the blast to read. I just love the reasons why magic can't be real compared to superpower.
