January 13th - Take 1
Nowadays I'm usually the one who does the summoning, but at that moment I was a very new, very young supervillain and that came with a bit of oversight. On that particular day, my plans were interrupted as I was forced to check in with another villain in the city, to make sure my plans weren't going to interfere with any of her stuff. It sounds more obnoxious than it was. More of a safety check than anything. They wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something the rest of the villains had deemed too risky.
Most dead supervillains come from the junior ones bowled over on the hero's way to arrest the bigger criminal. Only way to avoid it is establish yourself enough to get a record, so they treat you with caution and don't just assume you're some robot.
January 13th - Take 2
Time to recruit some assistants. I couldn't ask my foster-parents/minions to do it because they were already helping me-then. And anyway they would have been pretty mad to find out what I was up to on my own.
So I hired a bunch of people. Most of them were lowlifes, a few were competent minions, and all of them were willing to be summoned on January 27th with the promise of money.
