Luis Herrera

The name Luis Herrera is one that is spoken in the noble houses of Brankara with either a wistful sigh and a smile, or a scowl. There are no other alternatives, for he was intensely polarising to all who knew of him.   Herrera was an immensely talented and extraordinarily handsome young bard, with a voice which was reputed to make birds stop singing to listen to him outshine them. Trained at the Royal Academy of Art in Brankara, he graduated with distinction and set out into Brankara to make his fortune. He soon caught the eyes of nobles eager to distinguish themselves amongst their compatriots by putting on entertainments beyond compare. He flitted from one House to another, commanding significant sums and princely gifts for his unparalleled performances.   Whispers followed behind Luis that it was not only in the drawing room where his performance was superlative. Bored spouses of nobles away on business, attractive sons and daughters hungry for a taste of the forbidden; all were eager prey when they were alone with him. Eventually word reached the ears of Baroness Amansa Harlkann via a jilted lover of her husband, who was bitter at being tossed aside. The baroness was enraged, and swiftly arranged to have Herrera followed by investigators. They soon confirmed that the bard was engaging in amorous encounters with not only her husband but also her eldest daughter, the wife of her business partner Baron von Darskon, Duke Karstein's twin daughters, the eldest sons of the two most powerful merchant houses in the city, and quite a number of others.   The Baroness was briefly startled - and intrigued - at Herrera's sheer indefatigable stamina, but the fury soon returned. She broke the news to several of her allies who had been affected by his philandering, and the group swiftly organised to discreetly get rid of the young bard. Initially he was only to be driven from the city, but Count Galishoff was incensed at discovering Herrera had been sleeping with both his daughters simultaneously. This was particularly devastating as he had been planning advantageous marriages on the strength of their virginity. The Count despatched a gang of bravos with orders to eliminate Luis Herrera permanently.   The young bard was swiftly assassinated by the bravos, but word got out identifying the Count as having given the order. As the Count was technically the wronged party and had quite a large amount of political power, the rest of the noble families took no overt action against him. However, he soon found that his business contacts had dried up, his invitations to parties slowed to a trickle, and his political capital evaporated as the families who were angered by the loss of Herrera's many talents took subtle revenge. He eventually left the city and relocated to his country estates in disgrace.   Luis Herrera, the handsome young bard with the golden voice, is still the talk of Brankara years later.
