Carbuncle

Carbuncles are creatures which resemble a small armadillo with a gem set in its forehead. Descended from the fey, they are far more intelligent than they would appear, and have a minor ability to manipulate luck and probability around itself.   Easy-going, affectionate, and gregarious, carbuncles will readily bond with good-aligned beings which demonstrate care for them. The degree of the connection varies from simple companionship to a full familiar bond. Once per year, it may choose to detach the gem from its forehead and give it to a companion it greatly favours, granting them a valuable gemstone. Once in its lifetime, it may concentrate its abilities in the gem to create a Gem of Good Luck, or luckstone, which it gives to a deserving individual. Thereafter, it may only use its abilities to affect itself. In counterpoint, if the gem is ever forcibly removed from the carbuncle, it automatically gains the properties of a Gem of Ill Luck, cursing its bearer. Any attempt to remove the curse shatters the stone and leaves it valueless.   Ordinarily slow-moving, the carbuncle can tuck itself into a ball and then roll at high speed. It uses this ability to escape danger or if it feels threatened while separated from a companion, allowing it to swiftly reunite with them.
