Tenets of Faith

there are those who have no interest in redemption, who glory in slaughter and death. From the remorseless evil of the undead and fiends, to the cruelties born in the hearts of mortals, The Maiden's doctrines preach swift justice delivered by the scimitar's edge. To this end, she expects her faithful to be skilled at swordplay, both as a form of martial art promoting centering of mind and body, and so that when they do enter battle, their foes do not suffer any longer than necessary.

Providence

The Sun Maiden shows her approval by sending doves, or the unusual appearance of ankhs. She indicates her disfavor through unexplained sunburns or blindness that can last from minutes for minor transgressions to an entire lifetime for the worst offenses.   Edicts destroy the Spawn of The Ravenous Beast, protect allies, provide aid to the sick and wounded, seek and allow redemption
Anathema create undead, lie, deny a repentant creature an opportunity for redemption, fail to strike down evil

Priesthood

The Order of Purifying Light is mostly composed of altruistic priests who are also ready to be stern should it be warranted. The church is known for blessing crops, healing the sick, and reforming criminals and evildoers. They are often consulted to solve feuds and disputes among neighbors and families. The Empire of Rove holds her as their patron deity and is responsible for spreading her faith throughout Gradus. Here she is worshiped primarily in Kanmar, Hoicheungia, Havril, Tordal, Siumun , and of course Kilisnya, and among Guant, Eurabi, Tordic, Yamoto, and Halflings throughout Gradus. The Sun Maiden is also one of the most popular deities worshipped by the strange planar race known as Duskwalkers. Knights of the Purifying Light identify themselves by wearing white scarves around their helms and wielding the scimitar. They are willing to offer mercy to those enemies who seek absolution and renounce evil.

Clergy

A large portion Purifying Light priests are composed of Clerics, but within their ranks are also Champions and Rangers, as well as a few Druids and Bards. Some Priests work as personal retainers or healers for the wealthy, while others survive on assistance from congregational worshipers. A common form of worship by priests is to awaken with the dawn and give thanks and praise to the rising sun. The Scimitar is a favored weapon and its use is held in high regard, and it is often decorated with sunburst images in red and gold. In battle, her clerics become dervishes, ready to destroy irredeemable corruption. Formal raiments include a long white chasuble and tunic with red and gold decorations depicting the sun. Worship leaders often wear a golden crown topped by a red-gold sunburst.

Temples and Shrines

The main temples of Purifying Light are open-air buildings, although side buildings have ceilings. Many have brass or gold mirrors that refocus the sunlight on the main altar. Priests often travel from one temple to the next. The Everlight Oasis in Rove is a popular site of pilgrimage for followers of the goddess. Church services are held outdoors and are joyous affairs that feature singing, dancing, and music.

Holy Texts

The Birth of Light and Truth is the principal holy book of the Sun Maiden. It is customary for every owner of this book to inscribe her own uplifting stories in the last few blank pages, so that they can be recounted to others later.

Devotee Benefits

Divine Intercession

The Sun Maiden often bestows boons for making a sacrifice to do better or taking a risk to redeem another. She typically curses those who betray her mercy.
  • Minor Boon: Your healing hands are blessed with a warm flame. Once, when you heal another creature, instead of healing it for the normal amount, you heal the creature to full Hit Points, no matter how much damage it has taken. The Healing Light typically grants this boon in extremely consequential circumstances.
  • Moderate Boon: Your blade burns the irredeemable. Your attacks deal additional fire damage that ignores fire resistance.
  • Major Boon: You are a voice of peace and rehabilitation. When you roll a success at a check to Request something, you get a critical success instead. In addition, all creatures other than fiends, Undead, and mindless creatures allow you one chance to speak your piece and make requests before entering combat. If you or an ally ever use the time from the request to gain an advantage in an ensuing combat (for example, by casting preparatory spells, positioning for combat, or waiting out your opponent’s preparatory spells), The Sun Maiden immediately revokes this boon, or possibly curses your ally.
  • Minor Curse: The sun burns you for your transgression. You receive a sunburn that causes you to become permanently Clumsy 1.
  • Moderate Curse: The sun shines its light on everything you say. You become unable to tell lies, and if you attempt to do so, you instead compulsively blurt out the truth on the matter in question. You are still able to withhold information or lie by omission.
  • Major Curse: Sarenrae restricts your ability to harm others. All attacks you make, spells you cast, and other sources of damage you deal are nonlethal except against fiends and Undead, and you can’t ever make them lethal. You deal minimum damage except against fiends and undead. All creatures except fiends and undead gain a +4 status bonus to their AC and saving throws against your attacks and other effects.
