Years of Hunger and Cold
The Years of Hunger and Cold (Year 118 to 187, 16th to 26th Legislature Period) were a time in the history of Styx marked by economic depression, threat of starvation, freezing and strife.
Following the radical development of the political system of Styx after the Great Revolution and the nascent utopianism of the Unionization era the fate of the city changed for the worse.
A drought in the Summer season of the year 119 led to a long lasting famine as most crops that were meant for the Autumn harvest perished.
Without any goodwill of the Kingdom of Darklight and the Duchy of Sharhaven left after centuries of the Bezsvetowna dynasty making petty war and all notions of class solidarity between the now self-governing people of Styx and the "monarchic parasites" that ruled its neighbors being abandoned following the Great Revolution there was nobody willing to aid the people of Styx in their plight and when hunger and cold started grasping for the Kingdom of Darklight and the Duchy of Sharhaven by the Obsidian Sea with bony fingers as well they too stood alone.
The suffering of the people of the city was great, many were starving by the time Autumn came around and by Winter the threat of starvation was added to by the risk of freezing as the city also encountered a shortage of firewood to use for heating with most firewood being used in the industrial process.
The death toll rose quickly as people succumbed to hunger, cold and illness brought about by malnutration; it wasn't until the Year 186 that the death of God Empress Godrokalina and the diplomatic shift brought by her succeeding daughter God Empress Urelya Seraph as well as new developments in agricultural sciences and magitek led to some relief for the people of Styx and her neighbors.
As the weather got a warmer again harvests started to increase and newly established trade relations with the Kingdom of Darklight allowed by the newly ascended God Empress Urelya Seraph causing the situation to stabilize as Styx and its neighbors exchanged goods and resources more freely than they had since many centuries before the Great Revolution.
Diplomatic relations remained tense but trade flourished as Ryld Tharnova VI. also joined the new trade network connecting both Darklight and Styx to regions far beyond the Obsidian Sea via its maritime enterprises.
Though it took a solid 80 years from the start of this dark time to its end by the Year 187 the population of Styx had recovered and the extreme hardship of the past two centuries had been won over.
The technological advancements in this time were further developed in the following years, ringing in the Era of Axe, Furnace, and Coal.
