Ordin

Vindar Stonehammer (a.k.a. Ordin)

Vindar Stonehammer was born on the last day of Muamman's Tempest. While his family maintained the Stonehammer name, he was proud to be a member of the Goldthorn Clan that lived under the northern line of the Giant's Run Mountains.

When Vindar reached his 50th birthday, he eagerly followed his older brother Jordar in joining the Goldthorn Guard. He found out quickly that he could enter a trance that let him move with speed and agility no others could match. Soon after, his comrades began calling him Stormhammer, a play on his surname that matched the ferocity with which he wielded dual hammers. He spent over 100 years in the Goldthorn Guard, defending the stronghold from goblins, ogres, drow and even occasional giants. Proving himself a sound tactician as well as an able fighter, King Bergrim assigned Vindar to lead the branch of The Goldthorn Guard that protected the roads small villages of the Dragon Coast from bandits and pirates.

It was one of these encounters with pirates outside a town called Teziir that would break Vindar. He and his regiment of 40 dwarves engaged in a battle with over twice that many humans. Like many times before, Vindar invited the battlerage, but it was different that time. He could no longer distinguish between the two sides, and he didn't care to. When the trance finally ended, he was horrified to find enemies and kin alike had fallen to his hammer. Overcome with unimaginable grief and shame he had only two thoughts. Nobody could ever find out what he did. And more importantly, he must never lose control again. He worked for two sleepless days piling all of the corpses into a massive pyre. He left his armor and his now-famous hammers among the dead. There was no way to hide the damage his hammers had done to his fellows' armor, but he hoped that nobody would look closely enough to understand what had happened.

Vindar spent the next few years wandering and trying to forget that terrible mistake. Paranoid that Bergrim would send people after him, he kept a low profile and never stayed in the same place for more than a few nights, and always under a different name. In a final desperate act to forget he paid a wizard named Paradox to modify his memory. But the spell was interrupted by the Baldur's Gate Watch. As Paradox died in front of him, the unfinished enchantment aimlessly tore a network of chasms through his other memories.

Tragically, the memories of That Day remained, but he had lost many other things. He could no longer remember his family beyond occasional flashes. Anything that he had learned about his ancestors or Dwarven Lore were gone. The great kingdoms and heroes of the past were lost in the void. He could remember that he had studied plants, animals and weather patterns extensively in his preparation to lead his regiment, but most of that knowledge was gone now.

His spirit, and now his mind, broken, he traveled south to the Temple of the First Wall. The First Wall was dedicated to the ideal of perfecting the self through rigorous self-discipline. Feeling somewhat secure among the monks, Vindar permanently assumes the new name Ordin as a sign of his dedication to the precepts of order and self-control. While his memories are gone, Ordin has maintained much of his previous martial ability, even without entering the trance state. But Ordin is more interested in quiet meditation and the satisfying work of making bricks. The lessons on foundation and wall engineering are especially interesting as physical manifestations of the Temple's internal code.

But after decades of training, his mental scars persist and the masters have encouraged Ordin to seek peace with his past elsewhere. He has spent the last few years working to protect traveling caravans from bandits. Outside the monastery, he again gets uneasy staying in the same place for too long.
