Amulet of Apathy

This amulet was first designed for judges and rulers who wanted to be able to approach matters from a purely factual standpoint. In this it was a passing magical fad that was quickly found to be wanting. The ability to empathize and understand a view point it would seem is key to being able to govern or dispense justice properly. There was also the little known side effect that once the amulet was removed all of the emotions that had been suspended that day would then chorus through the wearers mind. Making long term wear highly undesirable.
While that is what the magical item was made for originally... It has since been discovered that is also insulates a person from feeling desire or excitement when going about various tasks. The biggest employment of Apathy amulets today are for wine tasters, potion tasters, and healers who have to check the newly delivered drugs and goods to asure that they are what they are promised to be.
The separation of emotion from action gives the wearer a powerful edge over mental addictions, but not physical ones. The item is still popular with some soldiers and people of dangerous profession to wear when they must keep a clear head. However the use of these seems to create a more acute mental trauma since it hits all at once when the amulet is removed.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The exact design of the amulet and it's shape/artistry are up to the creator. The size of them and material are fairly consistent.
A lode stone that works, a glass bead or gem with no blemishes, and a piece of wood or stone taken from a barrier, such as a wall or fence.
The items help to represent the desired affect, making the 'sympathetic magic' or thaumaturgy seal the spell into the objects that are now attached and usually placed on a necklace. Cloak broaches, bracers, belt buckles, and other such items have been used in the past. The size tends to rule out the item being made into am earring.

Significance

Wearing one of these comes with the expectaion that your job is dangerous or one known to destroy lives. As a result the common reaction to a person wearing one is curiosity or wariness. From time to time it comes with respect.
