The Black Scourge is wrapped in a mystery, having never intentionally communicated with any non-Scourged nations.
The Black Scourge is a seemingly autonomous unit of artificial creatures, with an alien mindset. Their only goal seems to be to expand and replicate, without thought for life. They ignore communications except when they use open channels to infiltrate computer systems. Their units are of infinite variety and seem to be capable of using almost every material, though with a preference for carbon and iron.
The Black Scourge Conflict was the first contact between the Gor Dominion, the Systems Alliance, and The Black Scourge. Systems Alliance scanners had detected the Black Scourge and, not aware of their nature, the Systems Alliance deployed diplomatic envoys. This only alerted the Black Scourge to the existence of the Systems Alliance, sending massive fleets towards the Systems Alliance and, due to their proximity, Gor Dominion territories.
The fighting was lethal and overpowering, the Black Scourge indiscriminate in who they slew and how. It took a combined effort of the Gor Dominion and the Systems Alliance to beat the Black Scourge back and even then, it was magic that turned the tide. For all their technological superiority, the Black Scourge seems to possess no magical ability and has significantly slower FTL travel capabilities than that offered by the magic-powered Drift Drive technology. Without magical defenses and much less mobile, they found themselves unable to advance and withdrew eventually, even giving up several planets that were not threatened by the combined Gor and Systems Alliance fleets to create a buffer zone between their territories and those of the Systems Alliance and the Gor Dominion.
Scanners confirm that the Black Scourge is still expanding and it is expected by most military analysts that eventually it will return.

Structure
The nature of the Black Scourge remains unknown, with all non-military research into them being strictly illegal. As such, the nature of their organization can only be speculated on. The most popular theory is that the Black Scourge is an artificial intelligence, with a distributed network intelligence. It seems that "Control hub" units are necessary for relaying information from groups of Black Scourge in a local area to the greater whole and some people theorize that there must be a central communications unit somewhere, though there is little more than hope to back this claim up.
