Tallek
View from Orbit
Tallek is a blue green planet with swirling white clouds and minimal polar caps. It has no moons but several transfer stations in orbit that collect agricultural goods for merchants visiting the planet.Surface
The surface of the planet is idealic with moderate weather and few strong storms. The land is primarily temperate plains that has been converted to cropland. Mountain ranges cover approximately 40% of the land mass. Most of the mountains are old and eroded rarely reaching 2,000 meters above sea level. Very little ore has been found in the mountains or anywhere on the planet. The temperature on the planet is warm and varies little. The planet gets a lot of heat from the stars in the system. Much of that heat is reflected by the tainted atmosphere resulting in temperatures that are normalized throughout the year. The oceans are very active and can be dangerous to travel on the surface. Many islands dot the oceans and are refuges for wildlife.Population
The population of Tallek live in thousands of independent farming communities. The farmable land has been broken into sectors and an individual community will be assigned to a sector. Communities range from 500 to 1,000 members and are often made up of members of the same race. There is a portion of the population that lives in the starport or in collection centers scattered across the planet. The collection centers provide for the transfer of agricultural goods to a transportation network of trains that brings goods to the starport where it is loaded onto shuttles and taken into orbit. Each collection center houses and provides for the employees that work there. The starport has a substantial resident population and contains medical and educational services. The planet also houses the Dalicron Space Combat Academy (DSCA). This academy was originally set up by the Dalicron government to train pilots in small craft space combat to support planetary defenses across the sector. Pilots are trained in fighters and system defense boats. Since the fall of the Empire the Academy has been training Renlus Federation pilots and has expanded it's services to small frigate and destroyer tactics. The base houses about 500 personel, including students.Industry
The primary industry of Tallek is agriculture. It produces a wide range of agricultural goods that are used to support the systems in the southern end of the sector,.Culture
The culture of Tallek is diverse as each community has it's own ethnic background or unique history. Within each community a counselor must be selected to represent the community in the Tallek Planetary Senate, a body that is composed of representatives from all of the communities and works together to set laws and settle disputes. It also manages the assignment of goods to new communities based on existing producers.History
Tallek was one of the first planets in the sector to be settled. Over 1,700 years ago explorers entered the sector from the Hydian Way. After surveying the system and its planets it sent information back to civilized space. The planet soon became the destination for settlers seeking their own land. Hundreds of settlements sprang up on the planet in the first few years. Over time some of the communities attempted to take over others, or raiders would hit a settlement and wipe out the residents, or corporations would attempt to buy out large communities. About 800 years ago a settler named Bandawary gathered together a large number of the small and moderate sized settlements and created the Bandawary Accords. This agreement laid out the rules for the Senate, the allocation and management of sectors, and the defense of the planet. The Accords specifically dictated that no two sectors can be owned or managed by the same group. In 335 BBY the Senate invited the Galactic Republic to build a base on the planet. It even built the foundation for the base. The reasoning was that if the sector government had a base on the planet it would make a less attractive target for raiders. It worked. The sector government allocated the base for fighter and system defense boat training and the number of raids dropped to zero. In 12 BBY a plague broke out on the planet and spread from community to community. The Senate petitioned the sector Moff for medical assistance. The Moff landed troops and began taking infected individuals to isolation camps where they whithered and died. The practice resulted in a large number of deaths as communities often resisted the capture of their members, resulting in the Imperial troops shooting not only the infected but anyone that resisted.Notable Features
Dalicron Space Combat Academy
The DSCA is a large military base on the planet Tallek. Over 500 personnel reside on the base. These are composed of trainers, ship maintenance personnel, security guards, and numerous support service personnel. The Academy has 3 IPV-1 System Patrol Craft and 6 Planetary Defender Fighters that is uses for training and, if needed, planetary defense. All students are trained in simulators and then in the actual craft. The training program for a fighter is 12 weeks and requires some previous piloting experience. The training program for the IPV-1 is 12 weeks and covers only a single role within the spacecraft.Grid Location: L-23
