Bryndar

View from Orbit

Bryndar appears as a bright white globe with a narrow ring of green and blue around the center. It has extensive icecaps and ice coverage below the polar region. The ring of green and blue is an area where the ice has not taken over, allowing moderate agriculture and civilization. In low orbit is a military space station that is home to a squadron of Imperial tie fighters and system defense patrol vessels. In a higher orbit is an extensive set of rings containing mostly ice but some occassional large rocks. Beyond the rings is a small moon that orbits slightly above the rings, making it visible from the northern hemisphere of the planet.

Surface

The surface of the planet is a study in, literally, polar opposites. The planet is near the mid point of an ice age where the glaciers have flowed as far as they will. The northern and southern hemispheres have frozen and large glaciers pushed towards the equator. In regions not near mountains the glaciers have dimished, leaving frozen tundra and snow covered plains.   Beyond the boundary of the snow and ice, closer to the warmth of the equator, more hospitable terrain can be found. Small agricultural villages dot the landscape and coastlines. Much of the land, where not cleared for agriculture, is covered in light forest and home to a myriad of wildlife.

Population

Most of the population live in one of the two large cities. These cities possess all of the necessary services, including medicine and education. The larger city, on the equator, has a moderately large Imperial base on the outskirts of the city, sharing the starport. The base is used to train Imperial soldiers. There is a sizable percentage of the cities population that supports the base and its operations. Many of the residents are used to dealing with soldiers and the military mindset.   The southern city lies within site of the glacier fields and extensive works have been created in an attempt to funnel the glaciers away from the city. The engineering feat necessary was colossal and will last for centuries. The residents of the city live in the shadow of the Shieldworks and many are employed in its maintenance. With the sessation of advancement the city council is considering options to turn the Shieldworks into something usable.    Outside of the two starport cities are numerous towns and villages. Residents living here live very rural lives, focused on farming and/or fishing for survival.   There is a segment of the population, living in the fringes of the icepacks, that hunts rare animals living in the snow covered landscape. These animals are known for their valuable furs.

Industry

Bryndar has no active industry. It's agricultural lands are enough to support the populace, with some storage access. It does import luxury goods and technology.

Culture

There is no single culture for Bryndar. The villages have a very agrarian style of life, based on the harvest cycle. Within the southern city the people's lives have evolved under the constant threat of the glaciers, and the building of the Shieldworks. In the capital, the military base has affected most of the population.

History

Bryndar was surveyed shortly after Dalicron. It was originally flagged as an undesirable planet due to the ongoing ice age and the belief that the world would eventually be totally encased in ice.   As time went by adventurers and the more daring settlers created villages on the planet and were prosperous. With the increase in population came an increase in weather monitoring and prediction. For centuries the planet was little more than a rural planet that happened to be on the route from the northern part of the sector to the southern.    When the Galactic Republic created the Dalicron sector and set Dalicron as the capital the planet gained more attention. The sector administration created a base on Bryndar for the training of infantry and planetary mobile forces. With the base came all of the civilian services to support it, and Bryndar grew.   Over 600 years ago, after several cities on the planet grew to populations exceeding 100,000 the continued encroachment of the southern glaciers became a threat to one of the cities. The planetary administrators were consulted, and then the sector administrators, in an effort to determine what could be done to save the city. The result was the Shieldworks.

Notable Features

The Shieldworks

The Shieldworks were constructed to protect the city of Vesper, on the planet Bryndar, from the encroachment of several glaciers inching toward the city. The Shieldworks form a titanic V-shaped wall that sits south of the city and towers over 500 meters high and almost a kilometer from mid-point to the end of each wing.   The foundation of the Shieldworks was created by using the hulks of two massive cargo hauler spacecraft. These two behemoth ships, the Heavy Hand and the Tilwath Dawn, were ships far past their prime. When the sector was seeking solutions to the glacier problem a merchant suggested it would be easier to purchase the two ships and use them to form a shield. The two ships were purchased and then, in a controlled crash, landed in front of the glaciers.   Many of the ships systems were still functional, and the rooms, cargo areas, and other spaces, remained operations. For many years there were people that lived in the ships. In addition to the bulk of the ships the city build up strong duracrete walls, using the ships as support, designed to redirect the glaciers.   The glaciers never got to the Shieldworks. They have stopped moving forward about a kilometer from the peak of the wall. The city of Vesper is considering what can be done with the structure. It has become the home of the less savory side of society and is known to house wanted people in the warren created by the ships interiors.
