Ward, Defender, also known as Ward the Defender, or even simply Ward, is said to have been a powerful knight at the dawn of wildspace exploration. Typically represented as a knightly human, he was said to have been slain defending others from some great evil, thousands of years prior to the Beholder Wars. Legend tells that She Who Provides travelled to the afterlife, scaling the black mountain with her raw hands, to retrieve him and several others to life in the uprising that resulted in the defeat of the eye tyrants.
Ward ascended to godhood and became the patron of defenders during the closing moments of the Beholder Wars, either as some divine reward for his bravery or via some other unknown means. The knight's body was one of few to be recovered from thousands slain in the great fleet, and was honoured across wildspace by being displayed in state at ports across the known spheres. After the major ports had been covered, She Who Provides is rumoured to have hidden his body away, should the need for his corporeal return ever be required once more.
Many Star Marshalls, watch officers, and members of other martial arms of the law pay homage to Ward. Soldiers and sailors alike pay tribute to him, to seek safe passage and return unharmed to homes still standing, or as they stand quietly in the night waiting for the darkness to move.
