Players enjoy many different approaches to characters. Some come to the game with a plan to play a beloved character from previous games, others enjoy randomisation of as much as possible, and new players often need assistance picking what they want to play. In oneshots and plot heavy games, pregenerated characters may be provided to fit a certain theme, or even tailored to specific players.
For players who want to create their character from scratch, this guide recommends picking a few themes and discussing them with the DM to bring the character to life.
Hit Points
Player characters use maximum hit points, as do major NPCs.
Classes, Species, amd Backgrounds
players are encouraged to use all the class, species (previously race) or backgrounds in official material, as well as the Artificer (TCoE), the Illrigger (MCDM Productions), and may discuss other source options with the DM.
The Standard Array
The standard array of ability scores as presented in the player's handbook is the default choice for the setting.
Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
2024 Player’s Handbook.
Optionally, you may reduce any of the standard array scores to a minimum of 3 if desired at character creation (sometimes this is done to facilitate plot, like a curse or a severe injury), but not as a trade-off for raising another ability score.
The DM may offer an alternative array relevant to the plot of the game. For example a Tier 4 game centered around characters on their path to ascension may use 20, 19, 18, 17, 15, and 13 as its alternative array.
Lastly, players may use the point buy option by request and with the DM’s discretion.
