S40-005: Finding a Drink in Salt Lake

General Summary

Mission Date: 11/16/1993 - 11/17/93
Mission Goal: To rescue psychologist Victor Lin and agent Nicole Marino from suburban Salt Lake City. Lin had coerced Agent Marino to follow him on a mission out west to locate a mysterious entity he had discovered on a birdwatching expedition several weeks ago. The mission was unauthorized by Site 40 Director Simon Peña and the head of the Site's psychology department Cassandra Phelps attempted to cover up the operation, but the secrecy of the mission was quickly dismantled when Agent Larsen was caught on camera in an interview with a local reporter named Jenny Slater.
Incidents: Victor Lin was found dead beneath a La Quinta inn in Riverton, Utah, by the agents involved in the mission. Agent Marino was successfully rescued from Salt Lake City and promptly reported her discoveries to Secretary Maya █████ despite attempts made by Cassandra Phelps to keep her silent about the whole ordeal. Agent Daly was injured by a masked entity referred to as the 'Ghost-Faced Killer' by local media, but she has made a full recovery back at Site 40. No entity like the kind described by Victor Lin's birdwatching expedition were discovered, a decision to designate the La Quinta inn as an SCP site of interest is currently pending further review.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE TRANSCRIPT OF A CONVERSATION BETWEEN SITE 40 DIRECTOR SIMON PEÑA, CASSANDRA PHELPS, AND SECRETARY MAYA █████ RECORDED ON NOVEMBER 19, 7:53 A.M.:
Simon: ...   Cassandra: ...   Maya: We already have Nicole on record saying you threatened to revoke her access to trauma counseling if she didn't keep quiet about the incident, and the members of the Odd Couple team you sent out have already come clean about their involvement. The world where you get away with this no longer exists, for your sake be honest so we can all have this matter resolved before the weekend.   Cassandra: Victor Lin was one of the best psychologists I ever worked with, and he served the Foundation honorably for more than a decade. The entitiy he discovered on his birdwatching expedition must have been traumatizing enough for him to go to extreme measures to discover more about it, regrettably through means not authorized by the Foundation. I do not condone his actions, but I believe that the Foundation should take his supernatural encounter seriously and assign a fresh batch of agents to investigate the matter.   Simon: This whole operation could have completely ruined our mortality rates for this quarter! Not only did you know about Victor's obsession with this creature, but you sent out four agents on a mission that could've had them all killed in a shitty motel!   Maya: Between this clear abuse of power and your failing record treating our traumatized agents, we can no longer allow you to operate at Site 40. You're being reassigned to administrative duties at Site ██, after six months it will be determined whether you're fit to still work for the Foundation of if you need to be decommisioned and amnesticized.   Cassandra: [sighing] Had this mission been successful, the psychology department here could've provided valuable counseling services out in the field to prevent countless breakdowns and lapses in sanity! One mistake shouldn't make you all lose sight of the potential here.   Maya: The mission was a failure, and your department is failing to provide any kind of real counseling for our agents. We're lucky none of our agent's identities were exposed by that local reporter, collect your thing and leave this Site immediately. You have thirty minutes before Chad will be authorized to use force against you.
[CONVERSTATION ENDS WITH CASSANDRA'S DEPARTURE, SIMON RANTING TO MAYA ABOUT MORTALITY RATES AND THE SITE'S PSYCHOLOGY BUDGET FOR ANOTHER TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES]

EXCERPT FROM A BULLETIN POSTED IN THE SITE 40 BREAKROOM ON 11/22/93:
As of today, Site 40's psychology department has been formally dissolved due to recent management issues. The department will be reevaluated in light of recent events, but for the next several months agents are encouraged to explore alternative methods for recovering from the trauma of previous missions (e.g. spending time with friends, family, or personal hobbies). Hopefully in the new year the psych department will return with a smaller but more effective staff capable of dealing with post-mission trauma better than ever before.
