S40-002B: Hiking, Reading, and Other Horrific Activities

General Summary

Date: 10/4/1993 - 10/5/1993
Location: Aspen, Colorado
Mission: To intercept a supernatural item being sold by a representative of Marshall, Carter, & Dark to Soviet agents. Incidents: Agent Cabrera fell to their death trying to explore the wreckage of a car; Agent Donovan lost their left arm in a confrontation with the Marshall, Carter, & Dark representative.   Summary: The Mc40's traveled to Aspen, Colorado, the day before the trade-off was scheduled to occur, quickly discovering the identity of the individuals involved in the exchange. Upon discovering the name and location of the seller (a blonde-haired woman named Sandra bearing an uncanny resemblance to an individual apprehended in Grand Junction), the Mc40's staged a raid on Sandra's room in the middle of the night and found her cavorting with a ██████████.   Agent Cabrera quickly dispatched with the ██████████, but not before Sandra used some of the item's power to grievously injure the agents and disintegrate Agent Donovan's left arm. This diversion allowed her to escape, leading to a brief car chase out of town and into the winding trails of Independence Pass before Sandra's vehicle spun off the of the road and crashed into the gorge below (Agent Sargent's driving must be praised for ensuring no damage was caused to the SCP-issued vehicle). The Mc40's struggled to retrieve the item from the wrecked vehicle, Agent Cabrera falling to their death as they tried rappelling down the cliffside and Agent Sargent struggled to hike down the cliffside. With Agent Donovan still recovering from the trauma of their mutilation only Agent Baker was able to hike down the gorge and retrieve the item. Agent Baker proved unable to provide a full description of the retrieval during her debrief, but a surveying of the area █ days later was unable to locate any sign of the wrecked vehicle or the corpses of Agent Cabrera or Sandra.   Conclusion: With the completion of the mission's stated goal and only a 25% mortality rate, this assignment has proven to be a total success with no need for follow-up by Chad's security forces. The Mc40's are granted an extended period of on-site rest and counseling before their next assignment.

FROM THE DESK OF CASSANDRA PHELPS, HEAD PSYCHOLOGIST OF SCP SITE 40, TO DIRECTOR SIMON PEÑA, OCT. 31, 1993, 3:31 P.M.:
I try my hardest to help our agents overcome the trauma inflicted by every mission, but the so-called Mc40's prove the limits of our traditional forms of counseling. I can help agents process the grief of losing a squad member, but what can I do to help them process eldritch horrors that can destroy limbs and summon terrible beasts? I once again insist that we need to rethink our counseling methods the same way we rethink our tactics after every combat mission: either we accommodate these new ways the world finds to make us go insane or we keep filling our padded rooms with agents unable to serve the Foundation to their full potential. Agents Donovan and Baker are clearly headed in that direction, I do not want to see others follow that same route; Agent Sargent proved remarkably open to counseling, I hope that the same can still be said when he returns from his next mission.
EXCERPT FROM A BULLETIN POSTED IN THE SITE 40 BREAKROOM ON 11/1/93:

Congratulations to Agent Lee Kramer and his promotion to the Mc40's! The latest success story in the Odd Couple program, Agent Kramer will help fill recent vacancies in the highly-praised field team having learned important lessons about teamwork and consensus-building from missions in Colorado. Employees are encouraged to congratulate Agent Kramer by leaving packs of cigarettes at his work desk over the next couple of days...
