Marching Horde

A loose collection of nomads, the Marching Hordes are roaming mainly orcish mercenary bands. Traveling around the world, Marching Hordes are never liked, but many rulers nevertheless find them useful. A Marching Horde is a powerful and reliable fighting force, as long as they are paid on time. However, the camps the Hordes build wherever they go to house their young often cause consternation among locals. In addition to the orcs that make up the majority of the Marching Hordes, they Hordes also host goblinoids and rarer monstrous creatures, such as trolls and ogres.   A Marching Horde is a warrior society in the purest sense of the term. They do not have agriculture, orcs that wish to settle inevitably leave the horde. Marching Hordes buy what they need through mercenary work. Every adult member of a horde is a fighter, even if they also serve other functions. Relatively light on artistic product, the hordes nevertheless have sophisticated customs of contract law and honorable warfare. Their itinerant nature also makes them fairly cosmopolitan and tolerant. Though they have their own private warrior gods, members of a horde will partake in foreign rituals as a matter of course. Their society does not enforce faith, and syncretism is common.   It is said that war follows the hordes, but equally the hordes follow war. The presence of a horde gives potential belligerents access to military force they might not otherwise have, but the hordes tend to travel in unstable regions because those generate the most work. Most members of a horde end up being involved in multiple major wars in their lives.
