Ormand Haemar
The Giff Mercenary Corps
Faction Type: Independent Military Auxiliary
Nickname: The Boar Company
Commanding Officer: Lieutenant-Colonel Ormand Haemar
Symbol: A stylized brass cannon with tusks, muzzle smoking, overlaid on crossed cutlasses.
Overview:
The Giff Mercenary Corps aboard the Yamato are not part of the Hurikami military hierarchy but serve under formal contract as an elite auxiliary force. Descendants of wandering mercenary bands, these Giff have chosen to bind their fate to the Yamato’s mission—not for coin, but for revenge. The Neogi cost them family, honor, and ships. On the Yamato, they’ve found both a cause and a target.
They primarily operate the ship’s Gun Deck, including its cannon emplacements and the three Great Giff Guns—magitech siege weapons the size of ballistae, capable of rupturing Nightspider hulls at range. They also maintain discipline on the lower decks and provide boarding teams for ship-to-ship combat.
Culture and Discipline:
While rowdy off-duty (famous for loud music, wrestling tournaments, and ritualized drinking games), the Giff are utterly professional in combat. They maintain strict gun-safety rituals, log every shot fired, and recite the names of lost artillerymen before each battle. Their quarters are spotless. Their gear is personalized but impeccably maintained.
They follow a semi-formal dueling code, and grievances among their own are often resolved in controlled single combat under supervision of a "judging boar."
Goals:
Vengeance: Every Giff on board has lost kin to Neogi raids. Their vendetta is generational.
Honor & Legacy: To prove the Giff are more than mercenaries—they are guardians of justice.
Camaraderie: Deep bonds tie them together, often more strongly than any oath to Yamato or Bahamut.
Challenges:
Autonomy vs. Obedience: As contractors, they often bristle at Hurikami command or religious orders—especially when restrained from punishing Neogi captives.
Limited Reinforcements: No other Giff units have answered their calls for support. Some fear the entire race is scattering or being culled.
Weapon Tensions: The Guild of Makers views the Giff's appetite for black powder and residue-heavy magical shells as inefficient or dangerous to the Hoardforge’s long-term stability.
Key Personalities:
Lt. Col. Ooglamaar Bronzefist
A noble-born paladin with a personal vendetta against the Neogi, Ooglamaar has become a living legend among the crew. Quiet, intense, and surprisingly philosophical when not shouting orders mid-battle. He wears an ancestral helm taken from his father’s corpse after a Nightspider raid.
Quartergunner Mukk Widemuzzle
An older Giff with only one good eye, he trains new recruits by screaming at them through a speaking trumpet—even when standing beside them.
Sister Kabbra Ironsnort
A devout follower of Bahamut and unofficial chaplain. Leads prayers over the guns and blesses munitions. Known to knock out disrespectful crew with a swing of her holy wrench.
Faction Hooks:
Plot Hook – Missing Arsenal: A crate of enchanted cannonballs is missing from inventory. Did a refugee steal it, or is it being sold on the black market? The Giff are about to start interrogations.
Social Tension – Gun Deck Incident: A priest from the Faithful attempted to cleanse the Gun Deck of “profane rites” (boar-head totems and ballistic prayers). Things nearly turned violent.
Roleplay Opportunity – The Duel Table: A Giff has insulted a PC’s honor (even unintentionally). Will they participate in a traditional duel, or seek another path?
