Saffron

Emergence

Known colloquially as “Saffron”, FF0000 was the first Spectre to emerge. They were also able to observe the emergence of the other two Prime Spectra, though they didn't understand what was happening, and cannot remember the event now. Their emergence marked the beginning of the Era of Birth, when the first lifeforms appeared on Spectrum.

History

When newly emerged, Saffron was both curious and apprehensive. They kept still and watched as Delphinium emerged, not moving until Sun had also appeared. They were slow to take in the meaning of their new existence, but were nonetheless overjoyed to finally be. The first Spectre they greeted was Delphinium, the latter having well come to consciousness by that time. The two Spectra simply looked at one another until the quiet was broken by Sun, who shouted with glee immediately upon solidifying.

As more and more Spectra appeared, Saffron found themself being shifted into a new position—not one of authority, per se, as Spectra are self-contained and there exists nothing over which to rule. That position was of trailblazer and guide to the younger Spectra. Initially Saffron resisted, citing that they knew no more than any other, and were no more equipped to study the world. With time, however, they have accepted this new interpretation of their identity, and have now comfortably settled.

Contributions

When the Spectra later began to learn about the mechanics of light, they were puzzled by Saffron's seemingly early emergence. As they discovered, red light possesses the lowest frequency, and therefore travels the most slowly. By the Spectra's understanding, red should have been the last to be born. Saffron's theory is that the lower velocity of the red light allowed the individual particles of energy to remain longer "in [their] body", causing a faster fusion.

A Spectre with a (perhaps more than healthy) fear of the unknown, Saffron didn't venture much outside of communing with the other two Spectra until the Era of Exploration. They found themselves pulled between their desire for, and love of, community and a need for peace and solitude. The inner conflict and constant external pressure took its toll. It was this exhaustion that drove them to become the second Revenant; finally they could be the follower, led by Onyx's trail.

Saffron resolved to throw themself wholly into the unfamiliar for the first time, hoping to build their own spirit at last. Saffron left during the Era of Delight and didn't return until the Stellar Era was well underway. Their absence had several interesting ramifications, one of which being The Great Divergence. Without Saffron's inadvertently imposing shadow to fall under, younger Spectra began to shine more brightly and become more distinct. At their return, Saffron was pleased to find the community flourishing even without them.

While their time spent in the abyss of space did serve as a resting period for them, it did not serve to diminish them in the sight of the other Spectra at large. The novelty of becoming Revenant added to their conversational appeal, especially with Spectra who had emerged after Saffron had left. This was ultimately a good thing for Saffron, as even after the long solitude of deep space and the relief of silence their drive to care for younger Spectra never left, and was even refreshed by their renewed sense of personality.

"I was so happy to see them come. We had no idea it was possible, and it had been just the three of us for such a long time. After we doubled in number I figured we were done. I had no idea how many Shades there would be."

"More appeared every time the sun came around to my part of Spectrum. There were no more empty places—just other Spectra everywhere. Of course, I was, and am, happy to see them, but they all would want my attention, and I am tired."

"The newest of our number are perhaps the most in need of guidance and care. There are... so many, born so quickly. I fear I can never know them all. I do wish Sun had been a bit more responsible, or at least paced themself."
