The Alliance

The Defensive Alliance of Friendly Systems, or more commonly seen as simply the Alliance is a collective defensive agreement and economic alliance that was established first by the Union of Socialist Systems and the People's Republic of Vingolf when the threat of the expanding Colonial Earth Empire was becoming too big to ignore. 
The first two founding members of the Defensive Alliance of Friendly Systems was the Union and the people of Vingolf. Vingolf had been holding out for several decades, and was incredibly happy to recieve free food, medicine, Medi-Gel and most importantly direct infrastructural support that helped them repair their Isotope-10 extractors. They soon worked to include Medina and Styx.
They constitute a wider alliance of socialist and communist governments in the Mid Rim. Imperial critics say that its just an umbrella for the Union to exert more influence over the Mid Rim. The alliance seems to benefit its smaller members however, as participation in the Alliance allows easy and free access to the industrial powerhouse that the Union offers. It also means a steady supply of resources like Plasteel, Buffa Gas and Isotope-10.
In return, Union gets access to the Mid Rim information network and has a greatly increased soft power among systems that rely on its aid shipments. Their infrastructure projects, especially when it comes to the interstellar gates have allowed regular shipments from sovereign space to the mid-rim to more than quadruple since the original founding of the alliance. Together, they all form a defensive military pact to prevent overt military action by all their neighbors.
The most recent to join has been the United Caspian Commune, though they are remote and cut off from a majority of their allies.

History

During the Silence, the Union had redirected most of its military spending towards infrastructure and building up Sovereign Space. As the age of the spacer began, they found themselves woefully underarmed and underprepared to deal with the aggressive and expansive postures of not only the Colonial Empire but the Musura Federation too. They also saw their long time ally, the Red Sun Commonwealth as completely defanged and locked in a death spiral with the Corporate Assembly. The once threatening Zym Hegemony once collapsed, but now they are forced to deal with the destablized Zym Cartels.
However, despite the silence leaving most of the Orion Arm decimated and in the darkness, Union saw a bright light. All across the galaxy socialists were still fighting and in many cases, holding ground. From the strength of the bulwark that is the United Caspian Commune to the spontaneous rebellions by the Ungratefuls they fought through the silence and emerged to a galaxy of allies.
