Kalari

Kalari started as a penal colony for prisoners of the Colonial Earth Empire during the Age of Struggle. It was mostly a lush forrested planet, but multiple world cracking mining operations would leave the planet permanently ruined. There are two primary regions in Kalari, the Sands and the Scar. The scar is the result of tectonic cracking mining operations that took place in that region. These mining operations were owned and operated by the oligarchs who would eventually organize the Grand Baronies of Carthage.
The Sands is primarily where the populations live, usually centered around massive sinkholes. These sinkholes serve a two fold purpose. The first, is that they usually mean easy access to the various underground aquifers, wells, and basins that were created in the planet's formation. The second, is that they offer protection from the large and aggressive sandworms that plague the planet.
Those who travel between the villages utilize massive sandcrawlers and walkers, and travel in large groups to protect against these sandworms. Many a skilled Lancer is born out in the Sands, hunting these monsters. The villages are technically under the control of the Baronies, but over the years the Kalari have proven stubborn and difficult to control, but they can be persuaded with access to water and luxuries. Thus, there is a very uneven trade here. Usually it involves spending rotations in the Scar, risking life and limb magma mining. However, the Ungratefuls have began to take root here in the independent villages.
In the Scar is where the Barony outposts and cities take root. Where the shielded cities play host to a workforce that has very little choice in leaving the scar, and the Lord Barons rule from onyx towers. Regular security forces are brought in rotations from off-world, usually from Carthage. Many of these security forces have spent other rotations enforcing Baron rule on Sunsword, honing their "policing" ability.
The Secret Service has also noted that there is a significant amount Spice originating from Kalari. The Baronies say they care about the problem, though many a individual oligarch has gotten caught by imperial authorities directly involved in the distribution of the drug to Imperial space.
