Daemon Species in Soulbank | World Anvil

Daemon

Daemon history has primarily been preserved by oral tradition, with differing accounts on their role. There is, however, a consensus that they were among the first intelligent beings of Soulbank, possibly existing before the Administrators. Daemons generally agree that their predecessors built the foundations of Soulbank, only for the Administrators to take it away and give it to the new Users. Administrators generally describe the process of taming Soulbank to involve warring with barbaric tribes of Daemons. Whatever their origin, Daemons now live by bargaining with Users peddling dubious wares and services, often sowing chaos in their wake. They often have access to primal code, even if they themselves cannot use it.

Known Subtypes:

Picodaemons: The most common variety at present, these smaller Daemons live in the hidden corners, often working as information brokers and advisors. The most common among these are known as Viral Imps.

Anthrodaemons: Also known as Kilodaemons, most are the same size as the average User. They are often persuasive dealmakers in their own right.

Gigadaemons: The size of large vehicles, these Daemons typically serve as muscle. Though they have a reputation for being the most direct Daemons, they still have their own subtle methods.

Teradaemons: Only seen in the rarest of circumstances, Teradaemons are enormous and ancient elders among their kind. All known Teradaemons have been sealed or banished in some fashion, far from the eyes of Users. Rumor has it that some free Teradaemons live in the mysterious place known as Backstage, never venturing into the world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Daemons are noteworthy for their abstract, almost geometric features. Though many are anthropomorphic like the typical User, numerous Daemons appear in animal and elemental forms. One common feature they all share is the decorative Eye of the Family, though its presentation varies wildly. Due to their relatively simple forms, "Primitive" has become a slur against Daemons. It has also lead to theories that they were the earliest form of Process, existing independently of Users, rather than the more common subservient ones of today.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Most Daemons have sworn fealty to The Family, a group of ancient Daemons who are rumored to have existed as long as Soulbank. When a Daemon is banished Backstage, they must typically defend their right to exist to the Arbiter and Jury. This arrangement has a number of detractors who see The Family as a corrupt, elite group who only seek personal power, rather than work to benefit Daemonkind.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Daemons change names somewhat regularly, keeping their "true" names hidden. They have a notable digital accent that typically translates their names into "133t speak."

Gender Ideals

Daemons are more likely to take on a gender identity than Process, but less so than Users.

Common Dress Code

Daemons commonly eschew clothing, seeing no need for modesty. Some will wear clothing as accents or to be more relatable if they routinely interact with Users who care about that sort of thing.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Daemons largely resent Users and Administrators as a whole, though individual Users can carve out exceptions. They tend to look down on Process with pity, though some see them as younger siblings.
