Book 1 - Chapter 5
Sergeant Rathgul's squad picked up in the morning with some mild disagreement between Corporals Lopez and McDunnough's teams. Finding some human excrement in his sleeping bag in the morning, Lupe failed to notice the snickering McDunnough. Sofia did, however, and confronted him. Seeing her scoffed at by the men, her uncle's psychic abilities made the girl appear to have her head spin around 180 degrees, startling McDunnough.   The squad arrived in the rural logging town of Madida that evening. While Lupe visited a local park to feed some squirrels, Jazelle shadowed him. Ursula went in search for a man who might possess a better rapier than the one she had, while the rest of the squad went to the biggest tavern in town. There, Lurch challenged Rathgul to a drinking contest, which he narrowly lost. Amon attempted to console Maskar in regards to the attack by the Kingsmen, convincing him not to run off without informing the corporal first. Shaw went looking for some women to help improve Maskar's disposition in other ways, finding a rather drunk girl and a professional whore named Kavindra.   In the middle of the night, Amon awoke to nightmares of Sekhmet and his transformation into a lion, then went outside to work it off in the rain by exercising. In the midst of this, Kavindra excused herself for the night and, seeing Amon, made some polite conversation with him before giving him her address and departing.   The next morning, the squad departed, leaving the supply caravan behind. They took the less furnished road running between Madida and Alistar, north of Raja. Along the way, they stopped to have their noonday meal and met a traveling potion salesman on the road. He introduced himself as Ristin, whom Lupe noticed had a slight Mismatean accent. Seeming well-traveled, he offered a healing potion to the interested members of the squad in exchange for their personal stories.
