Ekinu

The Ekinu are a race of monkey-like beings that come from the Moradin System and came to the Solar System along with the transportation of Ceres. They have an innate sense of wariness that comes from being hunted by the Shraak, but this has also led to a hardiness and tenacity for life rarely seen in other races.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ekinu are humanoid creatures with two arms, two legs, and a long, prehensile tail. Their feet are articulate like their hands, and they have six digits at the end of each limb and are covered in thick fur. Their arms are long and lanky. Their heads are large and flat with a snout that extends out from the rest of the face.

Growth Rate & Stages

The creatures grow to maturity over the course of around fifteen years. None know how long they can live as most are killed before they reach old age, but they begin to feel the negative effects of old age at around 130 years old.

The native habitat for the Ekinu are deciduous forests, where they make their homes in the trees.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omniverous, but they eat mostly vegetation as a matter of safety.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Each Ekinu is given a child name at birth, generally one or two syllables and ending in an unrounded vowel sound. At the age of twelve they take on an adult name which has two or three syllables and ends in a hard stop consonant sound. There are no differences between male and female names.

Average Technological Level

The Ekinu are masters of nomadic lifestyle. Over millennia of avoiding the Shraak, they've learned how to move from area to area, and how to farm crops without the aid of a tilled field.

Their normal language is Ekinu, an unknown language that sounds similar to Swahili with a more throaty pronunciation. Dwarven is a scholars/holy language tied to their history and religion.

Darkvision: 

Ekinu are naturally nocturnal creatures, having grown as prey of another nocturnal species. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Wilderness Survival Proficiency:

The Ekinu have been hunted and driven into the forests of Ceres for literal millennia. From these years of cultural shaping, every ekinu has basic survival training. You have proficiency with shortbows, longbows, darts, and nets. You also have proficiency in the survival skill and one of the following skills of your choice: stealth or perception.

Movement Experts:

Ekinu have prehensile feet and live in treetops. Your base movement speed is 35 ft, you have a climb speed equal to your walking speed and can make long jumps as though they were running jumps without moving beforehand.
